Issues emailing old exchange user with new mailbox

Question
-
Hi all,
So when an employee leaves, we export their mailbox to a .pst on a storage fileshare and archive/disable their account which will stay on the servers for 30 days before before fully removed to reduce space on the exchange server. If the employee returns, we create a new mailbox and link this to their old AD account which just gets re-enables after being disabled initially.
The issue arises when someone replies to an old email for the employee and exchange cant find them and bounces the email.
I understand there is an ID for each mailbox that gets associated with the AD account. Is it possible to assign the old mailbox id and the new one to the user so when people reply to old emails they dont bounce. Had a long google session but could find the right info. If we need to change how we deal with old mailboxes i would also love to hear from people.
Dave.

This is due to legagcyDN issue.
Please check the below article for better understanding.

Agree that this is a LegacyExchangeDN issue and you can read more about that here https://www.lucid8.com/documentation/DSWebHelp/TRO/Cannot_Reply_to_old_emails_or_Modify_Calendar_Items_Post_Migration.htm
I would look at another original user and compare the LegacyExchangeDN with a user thats working vs the one that's not. If a standard was used it should be easy to update the field
Search, Recover, Export Mailboxes, Folders, Email, Contacts, Calendars, Tasks, etc. from Offline Exchange Databases (EDBs), On-Premise Exchange Servers and Office 365. Migrate/Recover direct from any offline EDB into any On-Premises Exchange Server, even cross version i.e. 2003 → 2007 → 2010 →2013 → 2016 → Office 365 with Lucid8's DigiScope

Hi,
+1 on that.
We should add the old LegacyExchangeDN as an X500 email address in ECP.
how to add X500 addressesThe recipient address in the NDR resembles the following:
IMCEAEX-
_O=MMS_OU=EXCHANGE+20ADMINISTRATIVE+20GROUP+20+28FYDIBOHF23SPDLT+29_CN=RECIPIENTS_CN=Userxxx@mgd.domain.comWe could make the following changes based on the recipient address:
1) Replace any underscore character (_) with a slash character (/).
2) Replace "+20" with a blank space.
3) Replace "+28" with an opening parenthesis character.
4) Replace "+29" with a closing parenthesis character.
5) Delete the "IMCEAEX-" string.
6) Delete the "@mgd.domain.com" string.
Hope it helps.

Manu Meng
