Cannot ping network due to secondary nic, can I force traffic with a static route?

    Question

  • I am puzzled why this doesn't work.  I have a XP machine with two network cards.

Nic 1 runs to my lan: 192.168.1.21 255.255.254.0 gateway: 192.168.1.1

Nic2: this runs directly to a device with a hard coded ip that cannot be changed.  192.168.0.3 255.255.255.0

Now if I try to ping from the pc that has the 1.21 IP I cannot ping anything with a 0.x ip address.  But I can with a 1.x ip.

If I disable the nic 2 with the ip address of 192.168.0.3 everything works fine.

For testing I replicated the setup on my windows 7 pc and it works perfectly fine enabled/disabled.

Here is the route from the 1.21 pc:
