IE10 on Win7 and OWA 2010 can't drag and drop RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've upgraded to IE10 for win7.  When I login to OWA for exchange 2010, I notice I can't drag and drop emails into any folders.  Compatibility mode doesn't work either.  The only way for it to work is to go into developer mode and force "Document Mode" to "IE 9 standards".

How do we post bugs for the exchange team to fix?  I'm sure they have to update the OWA code to fix this.

  • I am having the same issue as Anonymously Me.  I can verify that my Exchange 2010 box is at SP3.  When I test this on a Windows 8 box it works as expected.  When you try to drag and drop messages on a Windows 7 box with IE10 the messages appear to go as a group of all messages in the folder your are dragging them from as a shortcut.  Another workaround is to Right Click on the message and select Move to Folder.

  • I have also noticed that Calendar Notifications are not working correctly.  I am getting a popup box when you click on the alarm bell that states "Notifications couldn't be retrieved.".

  • i have the same issues: can't drag and drop emails and calendar notification bug since i upgraded to ie10.

I tried to add the web address to the compatibility mode list in compatibility mode settings, but nothing changed.

  • I also notice the calendar notification bug.  Even though exchange sp3 was suppose to add support for IE10, it doesn't seem to be fully supported on windows 7 machines.  Does anyone know how to put this on the exchange team's radar?  submit bug somewhere?  Do they read these forums?

  • I second the request from "Anonymously Me".  Does Microsoft not look at these forums?  I am currently certified a MCITP and before that a MCSE, 15 years plus certification.  I make a living supporting Microsoft products.  I am disappointed with the direction that Microsoft is currently going.  It is one thing to have a non-Microsoft product not compatible with a newly released Microsoft product or Service Pack, but when you start having issues internally between core products, where is your QA team?

At best the Right Click on the message and select Move to Folder is a temporary workaround.  To be selected by Floria_Liao as a Answer is absurd.  How is this an answer?  Drag and Drop still does not work in IE 10 on Windows 7 where it does on IE 10 on Windows 8.  There is definitely a bug somewhere.  Not to mention that the Calendar Notifications does not work at all.  Come on Microsoft, WAKE UP.  I need you to be successful so that I have a product out here to support.

  • Does anyone from Microsoft have an update on this issue?  I have over 1000 home users who get back into their work email via OWA.  All of these PC's are out of my control and many of them are Windows 7 machines that have now updated to IE 10.  This is beginning to be a big problem.  I was hoping that the last "Patch Tuesday" would have had an update for this but all servers are now fully patched and the problem is still not fixed.

  • I have the same issue here and after update the Exchange 2010 to SP 3 the problem persist.

  • Confirmed problem. Doesn't occur between IE9 and Exchange 2010, only IE10 and Exchange 2010. But also doesn't occur between IE10 and Exchange 2007 (older version of Exchange still works with IE10). It appears to be an interaction between IE10 and Exchange 2010 (and possibly 2013, don't have that to test, but whatever version MS uses for Exchange 365 also has the problem).

Note that you can use IE9, Firefox, Chrome, just not IE10. Clearly a problem at MS's end, but I confess it seems more likely that the problem is with IE10 than with Exchange.

  • I agree.  It is probably a issue with IE10, at least the version of IE10 that Windows 7 uses, and not Exchange 2010.  As I said before IE10 and Windows 8 has no issues.  I can also confirm that Firefox and Chrome work as expected.  That is my current workaround for home users that have asked multiple times for a fix.  Use a non Microsoft product, they seem to work just fine, or roll back to IE9 if they prefer to stay with Microsoft.

  • Hi guys,

Do you use https in your owa?

I've posted in I.E Feedback program this issue and the Microsoft guys suggested to add the owa address as trusted site, but it did not solve the problem.

I'm not using ssl (https) in my owa.

My post in this link: https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedback/details/785896/i-e-10-on-win7-owa-drag-and-drop-does-not-work

  • I am using SSL (https) in my OWA.  My primary site has a certificate issued through VeriSign and my test environment has a self-signed cert.  Both sites exhibit this issue.  I have already tried to reset the Internet Properties to the defaults and have also tried to "Reset all zones to default levels".  Neither of those steps fixed this particular issue in Windows 7 using IE 10.  Also adding the site to the "Trusted Sites" has no affect.

  • I have a ticket open with Microsoft on this.  They have replicated the issue in their environment with Windows 7 and IE10.  And seen that it is all cool in Windows 8 IE10.

There is a temporary work around:  If you hit F12 to pull up debug tools, and set "Document Mode" to "Internet Explorer 9 standards", the drag and drop will work.  Notifications don't seem to be fixed by that trick.

I am not familiar with a way to auto set that setting.  So, it is really not an ideal work around for end users because you have to set it each time the browser is closed and reopened.

The tech has stated that it is going to take a couple more weeks to get a hotfix.  I don't know if it will be an IE hotfix or an Exchange hotfix at this point.

The issue does not exist in Exchange 2013 OWA.

  • Hi Kavin,

    Thanks for you replay.

It really works for me too.

I'm frustrated with I.E Customer feedback because they don't assume the problem. They persist to say the issue is my security settings in I.E 10 and only resetting it the problem should be solved.

The issue seems to be with the I.E because the same problem happen with who is using I.E 10 with SharePoint and office 365.

    Let's wait for the hotfix!

This is driving me nuts at work too.

  • Microsoft, Where is the update for this issue.  Its been 3+ months (.25 year) and still no update.  I hate to keep telling users to install Firefox as a workaround.

  • Same issue here. If IE 10 and Win 8 works I would expect a IE fix, but let's see.

Kevin, your workaround makes it work, thanks for the details.

  • Just tested this fix on my Exchange Server and it seems to work.

If you have access to the Exchange server, you can edit the start page to tell IE10 to use IE9 document mode.
     C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\Owa\forms\premium\startpage.aspx

     12th line down, you should see <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=10" >

     change to <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=9" >

Reload the page on the client side and it should start rendering in ie9 browser mode.

Ideally I would like to see a real hotfix for this issue, but this works for now.

    Monday, July 15, 2013 3:31 PM
  • This proposed fix of changing <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=9" > actually causes other issues.  For instance, if a user tries to click on a new email when there is no preview window, the email never gets marked as read.  So, I had to revert this fix back to <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=10" > to resolve this issue.  Until a real fix is released by Microsoft, I have instructed users to hit F12 and change the compatibility mode of their browser to 9.

Same here. Notifications can't be retrieved... but oddly enough, if there is an appt. the notification pop-up still works. Email notifications still work. But I get the error message that notifications can't be retrieved. Drag/Drop does not work.

Of course, everything works fine in every other browser.

This tends to imply that the programmers of OWA are using Chrome (or something other than IE) to do their development. Can't say that I blame them.

Setting the document mode to IE 9 does NOT work for me. I have also installed SP3 and RU1.

    Thanks,

    Dirk

  • It has now been 5+ months (.42 year) and still nothing.  At this rate IE 11 will be officially out before this is fixed in IE 10.

  • they released a new rollup for exchange 2010.  i haven't tried it yet, but didn't see any notes about fixing this problem.  if IE11 fixes this issue, then at least that is better than nothing.  Has anyone tried IE11 preview and see if that works?
    Wednesday, August 14, 2013 3:31 PM
  • I have installed Exchange 2010 SP3 Rollup 2 and that did not fix the issue.  There was also a Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 that was installed on  the client, but that did not fix things either.  The fact that you can set the client to use IE9 compatibility view and things work tells me its probably an IE and not a Exchange issue.  Also the fact that IE 10 works on Windows 8 points to a problem with IE10 on Windows 7.

  • I just received confirmation that this issue is being fixed in Rollup Update 3.  According to the ticket, Rollup Update 3 will be coming out in about a month.

I had previously heard that it would be in SP3 and it was not.  I hope that it is actually solved after the Rollup for SP3.

  • Thanks for the reply.  I just got tired of tired of counting the months without a response from Microsoft.  Lets hope they get it right this time.  This issue has been a pain in my side.

  • Hello

This is now fixed in the Rollup Update 3 of Exchange 2010 SP3.

I tested it last days and the RU3 now supports the Drag and drop in IE 10 !
It also supports IE11 as rich OWA GUI client (ie OWA in premium Mode).

    have a look at:

  • In IE11, if you drop out of compatibility mode after you've logged in, drag and drop actually works. You have to be in compatibility mode when you log in otherwise it forces you into "Light" mode. So that's sort of a work around ish, if you don't have the option to upgrade all your clients to Win8 or your hosted email provider hasn't yet updated to Rollup 3.
