DFS Server 2003 to DFS Namespace Server 2008 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • currently have domain-base DFS on server 2003 32-bit and want to move that to a new server 2008 r2.  once this is complete the old server 2003 will be decommissioned.  need som e guuidance as to proceeding with this or any know issues.  Would using Microsoft File Server Migration Toolkit 1.2 be a good option?

Also can I have a DFS namespace "A" and "B" replication so if say server "A" crashes then server "B" will resume DFS duties?   Server "A" would be the only server users will hit unless it crashes.  Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks

  • If there are more than one namespace, you will need to add Windows Server 2008 R2 to each namespace as a new target server. Then it will be one of the referral target as all the others.

There is no "primary" on DFS namespace after the initial replication is done. So after finish the replication, Windows 2008 will be the same as other DFS targets.

  • Hi,

If the question is only to move DFS to Windows Server 2008 R2, you can add it as a new referral target, do an initial replication and remove the 2003 one from the namespace.

Pre-staging the File Replication service replicated files on SYSVOL and Distributed file system shares for optimal synchronization

For the second question, in Windows 2008 R2, you can set referral A as "First among all targets" and B as "Last among all targets" as a test.

  • By adding it as a new referral target will that keep all the existing namespaces and target folders. that is to say will all the namespaces and target folders copy from server 2003 to the server 2008 r2?
