Windows 2008 R2 DFS and Windows XP problems RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am having an issue with a DFS configuration...

All servers including DCs are running Windows 2008 R2 x64.

Two sites are configured. Site A and Site B :)

Site A has 2 clustered file servers.

Site B has 1 DC used as a file server.

    DFS is configured as follows:

    Public has two folder targets.

Share1 on the cluster in site A and Share2 on the DC in site B.

    Now onto the problem...

All the workstations are Windows XP SP3 and some of them can't map to the domain based DFS name. I open Start, Run and type in \\domain.local\Data\Public and I get an error message that the path cannot be located.

I can ping domain.local from a command prompt, but I can't map to it.

I have access to both shares directly (\\clustername\Public and \\DCSiteB\Public) so it's not a permissions issue. I can ping the FQDN so I rule out DNS. What else should I look for???

  • I know this isn't the best solution, but I have seen on occasion that with xp sp3, if you delete and recreate the DFS link, the problem goes away. If you are able to do that, you might want to give it a try.
