2008 R2 DFS Namespace Root pointing to 2012 R2 target shares RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are running a Windows Server 2008 R2 server as a DFS namespace root in stand-alone mode. There are already a few DFS target servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 in the namespace. My question is can we create a Windows Server 2012 R2 server as a DFS target in this namepsace?  Is it supported to mix higher versions of Windows in an existing DFS namespace?

    Thanks,

    Kris

  • Hi Kris,

Based on my knowledge, DFSN and DFSR in 2008R2 and 2012 are compatible (assuming you have your namespaces configured for 2008-mode).

You could also refer to the article for more details.

  • Thanks Mary, that helped!  I also opened a case with Microsoft to confirm what you had said, and you are correct.  It is fully supported pointing to Windows Server 2012 R2 target shares from a Windows Server 2008 R2 DFS namespace running in stand-alone mode.  It is however not supported going the other way, so you can't point to Windows Server 2008 R2 target shares from a Windows Server 2012 R2 DFS namespace running in stand-alone mode, according to Microsoft support.

    Thanks,

    Kris
