Arrow keys typing numbers RRS feed

  • Question

  • In excel - when I press the left arrow key it types a 4, when I press the down arrow key it types a 2. But when I hit the up or right arrow key it moves to a different cell like it is supposed to.

I have hit numlock, i have hit scroll lock, I have tried 2 brand new keyboards and I have restarted my computer about 5 times... nothing is fixing it!

    PLEASE HELP  ME!!!!!

  • Hi,

Did the problem only occur in Excel?

Please try to use On-Screen Keyboard to see if the issue occur.

In order to troubleshoot if this issue is related to a third party service, please refer to following link to perform a clean boot.
How to perform a clean boot in Windows:
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows

And you could also try to enter safe mode to use Excel to see if the issue occur.

Here are steps to enter safe mode.

    1. Just before the Windows 7 splash screen shown above appears, press the F8 key to enter Advanced Boot Options.

    2. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, highlight the Safe Mode and press Enter.

  • I am having the same issue with at least 4 users.  It happens primarily in Excel however they have experienced it in another application was well.  I'm wondering if the issue is related to a Windows update.

  • Hi

Did you try to use On-Screen Keyboard to see if the issue occur?

Open On-Screen Keyboard by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking Ease of Access, and then clicking On-Screen Keyboard.

Did the problem occur after Windows update?

Please check the Installed Updates.(Control Panel -> Windows Update -> View update history -> Installed Updates)

  • For me this problem has been going on for a long, long time.  At some point while working on my PC the keypad will seemingly shift into numeric mode.  One minute HOME and END and the arrows are working as expected and the next minute I'm entering 7, 1, 2, 4, 6 or 8.

  • Gosh, I wish somebody would come up with the solution for this. Entering a string of numbers in excel is becoming almost unbearable. I would have to assume that this has to do with either a Office update or a Windows update.

  • This worked for me.

    Open - Device Manager

Click - Keyboards  ~ I have 2 "HID Keyboard Device" displayed. I deleted one of them and my problem was solved. If you delete the wrong one then your keyboard will stop working. Unplug it and plug it back in so it can re-install. Then try again. You may need to refresh your Device Manager. Hope this works for you.

  • I only had 1- "HID Keyboard Device" displayed, but deleted it anyway.  Unplugged and replugged the keyboard with no change.  Interestingly, only the right arrow is non-functional (types a "6") in Excel.  Up, down and left arrows work fine.  I have been working with PCs since 1985 (at times as a professional IT), and this is a new one for me.

  • Actually the problem was more extensive than I thought.  I had just installed Windows updates, but rather than uninstall them, I restored an old image.  Now I do not know what to do with the updates.

  • The problem of my arrow keys intermittently typing numbers and my numeric pad intermittently acting like the NUM LOCK was off turned out to be the deterioration of my five year old keyboard.  Replacing the keyboard with one that I had lying around solved the problem.  The Windows 7 updates are now reinstalled.

  • I have a Microsoft Surface 3 and about a year ago docked it with a large monitor and a wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse.  It worked fine for a long time and then my number pad started having the random arrow over issue and my arrow keys sometimes type numbers.  I work in accounting and this is a HUGE problem.  I got a new Logitech keyboard/mouse combo and that worked for a about 2 months but now it's doing it again.  I tried deleting the HID Keyboards and it still doesn't work.

Would getting a Microsoft keyboard help or is this issue happening with all makes and models?  I'm almost ready to get a new laptop but am afraid it will continue.

    Are there any solutions???

    p.s. I have upgraded to Windows 10.

  • Have you found a resolution to this?  I have 4 users who use the number keypad daily for payroll, accounting etc. I have tried everything that I know to fix the issue, with no luck.

  • I have the same issue, but my users are usings Windows 10.  I've tried safe mode with no luck. Have there been any updates to this problem?

  • Did you have any luck with this issue?  I have 4 users who have trouble with Excel, and they've had issues with Word as well.

  • I am having this problem on brand new win 10 PCs and Excel 2019.   In excel, down arrows sometimes types a 2, and typing a keypad 2 sometimes moves down to the next cell.  Same with right arrow and keypad 6.   This is a SERIOUS problem here in our accounting department.

Is there no fix for this?!!!!

  • I assume you are a bank or credit union.  I've narrowed this issue down to a program called SafeNet used to access the Federal Reserve.  If so, contact the Fed and explain your problem - they'll give you a different version of SafeNet to use.

  • This was the issue for us (a Credit Union).  There is a "Extra" folder in the SafeNet folders.  You have to show hidden files to see anything but we installed if from there and now everything is great.

  • Could you explain what you did for this? What did you install from the "Extra" folder?
    Monday, October 21, 2019 9:44 PM
  • In case anyone else comes in here with the same issue, the hidden "Extra" folder has two different versions of SafeNet installation files in it on the software installation CD. I ran the 64 bit version and it seems to have solved the issue.

  • Thanks a million for posting this!!!!

We had the same issue as well -- the NAKL version (north American keyboard layout) installer fixed it.

Uninstall old version of safenet, find the hidden extra folder, run the NAKL 64bit driver installer.

Reboot -- try again. All good now. Thank you Chris Due!

  • Just wanted to point out that the NAKL stands for No anti-Keylogger. The "Hidden" version of safenet does not contain the same security features as the default one recommended for installs. If you are experiencing issues make sure to call into Fed support and report the issue so it does get fixed in a future release as this is affecting both excel in windows 7 and windows 10.

  • I had narrowed it down to employees with HP Elitedesk 800 PCs have the problem, even if they don't have the Safenet client. Users with HP Elitedesk 600 PCs do not have the problem (with and without Safenet client). So I was leaning towards it being a problem with the PC. I've reached out to my FED contact for further info. I will also confirm on more PCs who have and doesn't have the problem as I may not have surveyed enough PCs to catch the Safenet client connection. All PCs are Windows 10 with Office 2019. As a CU Accountant, Excel is my best friend so it's been quite an adjustment.

  • Thanks for posting this!  I called the Fed about this.   They knew about the problem and confirmed that the solution below is correct - uninstalling safenet, rebooting, then installing the hidden version in the Extra folder.

I told the rep that we've been pulling our hair out with this for months until I checked back here and saw that it was related to safenet.   I asked why they would not communicate this to financial institutions that use their software.   She said that they won't do this "for security reasons" !!!    We will be contacting our fed rep to lodge a complaint.   I was already not happy with them after their problem with Win 10 1809 that bricked several of our workstations requiring a complete rebuild.

    Thanks again for your help!

  • I am confused by the hidden version in the "Extra folder" you are talking about. How/where do I locate this to reinstall?
    Tuesday, January 7, 2020 3:52 PM
  • The folder is hidden, make sure you have set Windows Explorer to view hidden files. On my pc I could see the folder but it looked empty until I checked the box for Hidden Items. It is at the top level of the install cd or zip file. You may also need to ask your FED rep for a new copy of the software

Also big thanks for posting this, it has been driving a couple of people in accounting crazy for the last few weeks.

  • I've had an issue similar to this on a Lenovo laptop. When NumLock was on, the Arrow, Home, End, etc. keys were typing numbers. After two days of searching everywhere and trying everything possible, I've found a solution on Lenovo forums. It might come in handy for someone here and save them time, so here it is:

    1. Shut down Windows and unplug the charger / adapter.
    2. Remove the battery.
    3. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds.
    4. Re-install the battery, plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.
