  • The issue is resolved ..... the resolution was to end the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) that was started with the install of an update to the exchange server.  Once the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) was stopped/disabled external emails were being received.

Ed - thanks for your assistance to help us resolve this problem!

  • Okay, you'll need to find out the server to which the traffic inbound from the Internet is connectiong.  We changed your port 25 receive connector to use the new banner, and you tested it and see the new banner.  When I do a telnet to port 25 from the Internet to mail.idealhomeloans.com, I see this banner:

220 Exchange.IHLcorp.local Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 7.5.7601.17514
     ready at  Wed, 23 Mar 2011 14:00:19 -0600

I did it just now, again for like the sixth time.

The Internet is not talking to EXCHANGE.  Maybe your ISP has screwed something up.  Do you have an SBS server?

  • This would be a lot easier if you didn't try to hide your identity.  Are you testing e-mail domain Exchange.com or idealhomeloans.com?  Please post the complete results of the test without hiding your identity if you would like a useful answer.

  • Check your spelling and make sure you're in the EMS.  You are running Exchange 2010, correct?  Post what you typed and the result by copying it to the clipboard and pasting it.  Use autocomplete, type Get-Accep and then press Tab.

  • One more thing.  You say that you Exchange 2010 and SBS 2008 SR2.  Do you mean both on one server or separate servers?

We changed your server's banner.  One more check; enter this:

That's all, and post the results.  It will tell me whether you have another receive connector.  (I didn't see one when you posted the verbose output earlier.)  Also post the results to this:

    Get-TransportServer

It will tell us whether you have an Edge Transport Server or not.

I did it just now, again for like the sixth time.

The Internet is not talking to EXCHANGE.  Maybe your ISP has screwed something up.  Do you have an SBS server?

  • The issue is resolved ..... the resolution was to end the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) that was started with the install of an update to the exchange server.  Once the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) was stopped/disabled external emails were being received.

Ed - thanks for your assistance to help us resolve this problem!

  • You should remove the SMTP service.  It is not installed by default nor is it installed by an update.  Someone installed it, which is understandable because it used to be a required component for Exchange 2003.  Starting with Exchange 2007, Exchange has its own SMTP component.

  • Hi, know its a few month later but facing 5.7.1. problem. recently upgraded all exch 2010 to sp1 and rollup 5. startd getting issues with OWA not fully resolved yet, also no incoming email with 5.7.1 no mailbox. in addition, exchange mmc reporintg kerberos auth error and will not work. have 3 rolse, cas, hub, mbx and forth server isa2006 with 3-leg. CAS has BB BESX 5.02. Had to redo IIS ssl and redirect config on CAS for OWA. BESX not working. will try upgrading to BESX SP. quite a mess! the problem is we cannot find what is it that this bloody SP1 changed so we can go over it !

now also getting this from owa after initial succesful login screen:

    Exception type: Microsoft.Exchange.Data.Directory.ADTransientException
Exception message: Could not find any available Global Catalog in forest xxx

ran exchagne connectivity online and got ok for outgoing email and additional info for incoming:

Testing the MX mail.techeg.com for open relay by trying to relay to user Admin@TestExchangeConnectivity.com.
The Open Relay test passed. This mx isn't an open relay.

    Additional Details
The open relay test message delivery failed, which is a good thing.
    The exception detail:
    Exception details:
Message: Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: 5.7.1 Unable to relay
    Type: System.Net.Mail.SmtpFailedRecipientException
    Stack trace:
