Exchange 2013 - CU2 Install Fail - Error code is 1603 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Error:
Unable to remove product with code 4934d1ea-be46-48b1-8847-f1af20e892c1. Fatal error during installation. Error code is 1603. Last error reported by the MSI package is 'Unable to install because a previous Interim Update for Exchange Server 2013 Cumulative Update 1 has been installed.  Please use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the Interim Update before running this setup again.'.

The install hangs here after it has disabled a number of services. I have to go back in and re-enable the services to bring Exchange back online. However, smtp still does not respond devices other than itself.

    1. How do I get SMTP back online with that server

    2. How can I get CU2 installed. My understanding is that uninstalling CU1 means removing Exchange entirely which I do not want to do.

I have a 2 server environment with 2 databases and a single DAG.

  • The solution was to uninstall a recent "Security Update for Exchange Server Cumulative Update 1 (KB2874216)". Although the product code pointed to the original CU1 source files, the issue was actually this security update.

In Uninstall Programs, Select Installed Updates to view the add on security update and uninstall. Then restart the server and re-run the CU2 setup.

  • Hi.

I know this is a bit late, but I need your help.

When I try to install the new release I receive die following message
Unable to install because a previous interim update for exchange server 2013 cumulative 1 has been installed

When I try and remove it via add or remove programmes it gets to a stage where its looking for the exchangeserver.msi, and that’s where I get stuck.
When I select the exchangeserver.msi from my media I get the following error
the exchangeserver.msi is not a valid installation package for the Microsoft exchange server product.

    Thanks in advance

  • You should point to the directory of the extracted CU1 installer, not specific files.

BTW: I've encountered this issue as well and blogged about it here.

  • Daves response is excellent, but it might just work on the version 2 of the fix. I cant install the kb2874216 v2 it say I have to deinstall v1 first.

Unable to install because a previous interim update for exchange server 2013 cumulative 1 has been installed.

When I try it asks for CU1, however presented to the folder where cu1 lay, it complains, not a valid file.

the exchangeserver.msi is not a valid installation package for the Microsoft exchange server product.

    Catch 22

Several users have the same error no answer found yet!

  • For those who found this, I know you are in trouble; a quick update became a nightmare. I thought making a snapshot of the vm was good enough as backup but the patch preps the AD and breaks everything.

    [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v15\Setup]

    removed "InterimUpdate"="2874216"

that was the fix after a 2 hours call to MS OAS; hope this saves you $499 because Exchange 2013 is EOL so our usual support tickets don't count.
