Moving File Share Witness to another server RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have currently deployed Exchange 2010 DAG (2 nodes) and HUB/CAS server. All the servers are in Virtualized environment.

I want to move the File Share Witness which is currently on HUB/CAS server to some other dedicated server.

Kindly let me know the procedure for moving the FSW and if any precautions that need to be taken to carry out this activity.

    Regards,

    Joel D'Souza

  • Hi Joel

You can move the File Share Witness with the following command's:

    1. cluster Yourclustername resource "Majority Node Set" /priv
    2. MNSFileShare=\\the new server \ the new share
    3. cluster Yourclustername group "Cluster Group" /move
    4. cluster Yourclustername group "Cluster Group" /move

More information about the cluster command:

Also have a look at Example 1 and 2

You dont need to worry much about the Cluster. As even if your Quorum is down for sometime it wouldnot effect the cluster as the majority that is the 2 nodes would be up.

  • Even before you can move the FSW to the new server you must add the Exchange Trusted Subsystem group into Local Administrators group membership. Unless you do that the FSW folder may not be created.

  • You should be able to change it with the Set-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup cmdlet.

  • Dears;

i have did this by set-DataAvailabityGroup -identity "DAG Name" -witnessserver "new server"  -witnessdirectory "directory path"

but be sure that the group Exchange trusted subsystems is member of administrators group on the new server.

  • ALISA, when this comand is executed finish ok but the shared properties no changes in the new witness directory, i try make the changes manually in share properties exactly equal how the original witness directory, but when make an failover don´t work fine, the database appear unknow state.

    Maybe another less configuration...¿?
