Upgrade SCCM (Server and SQL) RRS feed

  • Question

  • We currently run Configuration Manager 1806, in a 2012 R2 windows Server with SQL 2012. Only 1 primary site, with 20 DP.

Can we clone this computer ON Prem, Disable the nic and Update everything on it, (windows and SQL), and then Switch off the old and on the new, is that Possible? or is it even the best route to do this?

    Thanks in advanced

  • Hi Miguel,

Disabling the NIC is not a good idea because the Site server need to update the DP.

Do you have SQL Server and SCCM on the same host?

If you have a virtual machine, I suggest to you to make a snapshot of the SCCM/SQL server before starting the in-place OS upgrade. If you host the server a physical machine, you can run a Backup of the site server using Maintenance Tasks.

Once the snapshot/backup is done, start the upgrade of the Operating System, then SQL, then SCCM.

Don't forget that SCCM 1806 is out of support, you have to upgrade it also ASAP.

    Refer to the following links:

  • I meant disabling NIC of a cloned server to avoid the IP conflict, but i see what you mean of just doing the snapshot before the In Place Upgrades over the same original server.

Yes the SQL lives in the same Primary Site for the moment, back then when we build it, it was the best practice to have them together, not sure if is still the best.

I will definitely upgrade the SCCM site to the latest too. Thanks for your advice.

  • Yes, It's always better to install SQL Server & Site Server in the same host.

If you clone the server, you can upgrade it in offline mode just to test the OS & SQL upgrades. After that, you have to make the same with your primary server.

  • Hi,

Do you really need to migrate the current hierarchy? We can in-place upgrade site server and SQL Server.
Here is the Pros and Cons of side-by-side or In-Place upgrade migration:
The Side-by-Side upgrade involves setting up a new server with the desired OS and installing the SCCM with a new site code name.
    Pros:
lower downtime due to still having the old infrastructure in place, up and running, until the new one is ready
if something goes wrong in the migration process, you always have your main infrastructure operational
    Cons:
more hardware resources required since you are setting up a new server (this involves additional costs)
the process itself it’s harder and involves additional steps

The In-Place upgrade involves upgrading the SCCM directly on the current machine operating system using the baseline media file and choose the install type as “Update”.
    Pros:
    no additional hardware required (cost-saving)
faster and easier process compared with a side-by-side migration upgrade
    Cons:
    bigger downtime during the upgrade
if something goes wrong during the upgrade, troubleshooting takes time

If we perform the migration, we do not need to disable the NIC, we may refer to Jason's blog for the details:

  • Hi,

It seems there is no update for a couple of days. May we know the current status of the problem? Is there any other assistance we can provide?
