Windows 2008 R2 DC to Windows 2012 R2 DC Migration RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

We have 2 sites, say Site1 and Site2. With Site1 we have 2 X DCs, PDC.Domain.com and ADC.Domain.com, with Site2 ADC2.mydomain.com. All with Windows 2008 R2 on physical servers with AD-integrated DNS . We are planning to migrate the DCs with Site1 to Windows 2012 R2 based VMs with same name and IP, since there are many applications & appliances dependent on existing name & IP. We plan the migration as mentioned below

    a) Prepare 2 HV standalone host servers and add them to domain

    b) Prepare VMs (one VM on each HV host) with Windows 2012 R2

    c) Take full backup of ADC.Mysagia.Gov and depromote DC role & decommission the server

    d) Once replication is completed fully, confirm all information related to the DC has been removed from AD using ADSIEDIT

    e) Name the VM same as demoted DC, assign same IP, add to domain, add the DNS role and promote as domain controller

    f) Again once replication is completed move the FSMO roles from PDC to ADC

    g) Take backup of DHCP to miragte it later from PDC (DHCP is configured here)

    h) follow steps c-e

    i) Add DHCP role and migrate DHCP

    j) Once replication is completed move back the FSMO role

Are the above mentioned steps are correct to follow?

Since Windows 2012 R2 based DCs are using only DFS based replication, do we have to make any changes with existing Windows 2008 R2 based DCs (we can see both DFS and FRS with Windows 2008 R2 DCs)?

Do we need to install any hotfixes with Windows 2012 R2 servers? Which roles and features are needed with Windows 2012 R2 server?

Also how can we make sure that the replication and folders are healthy once we complete the migration of each DC

    Thanks in advance
