autodiscover dns setup

    Question

  • Should I create a host record for autodiscover.domain.com on my internal and external DNS servers? It looks like I would need it on my external for Outlook Anywhere access, however that is the only direct benefit I see.  Any additional comments or advice on this would be appreciated.

    Thank you

  • Hi Mac,

You have two main options that Autodiscover is hard-coded to look for without getting the slightly more complicated SRV record method.

    autodiscover.domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml

    or...

    domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml

Without autodiscover funtioning your Outlook 2007/2010 clients will not be able to automaticallyl configure themselves, nor find the EWS directory to do things like rule managment, OOF, mail tips, settings that need ECP for Outlook 2010, etc...

So yes, I would use whichever method is better for your organization. The name can be just another SAN on your SSL certificate.

  • Hi Brian,

Why then Microsoft saying that "In your external DNS zone, remove any HOST (A) or CNAME records for the Autodiscover service."?
