Outlook says "Updating Address Book" At all times, manual download of OAB stops at "copying offline address template file" for one user RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey guys,

So I'm having this issue where my OAB does not seem to be able to download correctly. Thankfully, I've tested most of the other computers in the office, and I'm the only one with the issue. So I don't think it has to do with the exchange configuration. But for what could be causing it, I'm at a loss.

I will tell you that this all started when I reformatted my computer and re-installed office.  I even reformatted again, but the same issue is appearing for me. I also dis-joined the domain, then deleted my computer account from the domain. Same issue. The second time I reformatted I used a completely different name.

Any ideas? I'm tearing my hair out, it seems like I've tried everything.

    Thanks!

    John

  • Hi John,

Sorry for the delay response, I’ve performed a deep research and consulted a next level engineer, the issue you are encountering might be a known issue that is caused by a problem with wireless devices like mouse or keyboard.

Please check if you have the wireless driver installed. If so, please update the drivers according to the  hardware or remove the driver completely and then switch to cable-connected device to see if the issue continues.

If there is no wireless device, please remove Office application, reboot the computer and perform a local install from the setup.exe program (you might need help from your IT guys). After the reinstallation, reboot into Safe mode with network connection again to see if this works.

    All the best :)

  • Does it work for you from another workstation?

  • Good Question! I will try that today.

I would think that it would do that same thing on another workstation, simply because I've reformatted twice now. Is there something I can reset for myself on the exchange server? What were you thinking?

    I'm desperate, so I'll try anything ;)

EDIT: Ok, I tried it on another PC. It works fine =(

Just as a note, after I reformatted, it did work. (I did a manual download) It was only a few days later when it stopped working. So I will keep an eye on this other workstation to see if it also stops working.

I'm trying to think of anything I could have loaded that would be causing the issue, but I just don't see it. I have MSE on both workstations, along with office, but beyond that really nothing else.

    Frustrating!

  • Hi John,

It has nothing to do with your user account and the Exchange server. I am suspecting there is conflict while Outlook is downloading the OAB files. Please try the steps below:

    1. Create a new Windows profile to see if you are able to download OAB. To do this, logon your computer as another administrator account, change the name of your original profiles (If it is XP, the profile is under c:\document and settings\Users\Yourlogonname; if it is Win7, the profile is c:\users\yourlogonname). and then logon again as your user account to see if this works.
    2. Restart Outlook via command "Outlook /safe" and then try again to see if you are able to download it. If this works, the Outlook addins could be the cause.
    3. Restart your computer and enter into "Safe mode with network connection" then try again to see if you are able to download the OAB. If this works, the startup application might be the cause.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

  • HI Fiona,

I've attempted to do what you've said, however outlook does not work in windows safe mode- When I launch it, it attempts to run office setup (and outlook reports itself as being unregistered)

I'm not really sure where to go from here. I disabled all startup programs and tried running outlook /safe, but this had the same result.

If I try to manually download the OAB, it hangs at "Copying offline address book template file".

I also tried creating an whole new windows profile, (deleted the old one) but it is the same result. IT seems to work for everyone else, and my profile works on other workstations.

    I'm at a loss.

    Thanks,

    John

  • Thanks a lot Fiona..!! In my case, the machine was connected with a Microsoft Wireless Keyboard and mouse with the default Windows Drivers installed.  I could fix the Outlook OAB not downloading issue by re-installing the latest Wireless Keyboard and Mouse drivers from Microsoft.

    Thanks a bunch!!

  • I was a using an 11 year old driver for my Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3000. I updated to the latest from 2017 and it solved the problem!
