Exchange 2013 legacy hostname RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,I'm migrating to Exchange 2013 from Exchange 2010 and would like to know if you also have to use legacy hostnames in for this? If not, what is the planning when using the same hostname? Do I just have to point dns to the Exchange 2013 deployment and it will still work for 2010 mailboxes (and for legacy clients such as outlook 2003)?

  • You don't need a legacy host name when you migrate from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013. External clients  connect to the Exchange 2013 CAS which then proxies the connections, including OWA to the Exchange 2010 CAS.

  • Hi Kevin,

It won't work based on my research. This is because Exchange 2013 CAS server is simply an authentication and proxy/redirection server; while Exchange 2010 CAS server rendering data for MAPI clients.

I am suspecting Exchange 2013 CAS server will redirect the request from mailboxes resided in Exchange 2010 server to Exchange 2010 CAS server, and so the legacy CAS server should be available from external network.

However the document is still in process and a lab test would be a better way to emulator the environment and unexpected issues. Your understanding would be appreciated.

  • Thanks for your answer Byron, will this also work for legacy clients such as Outlook 2003?

  • Hi Gulab, I know, but will exchange 2010 mailboxes work with Outlook 2003 when proxied over a Exchange 2013 CAS?

  • Hi

An Outlook 2003 client will not be able to connect to Exchange 2013 - you may be able to manually configure Outlook to connect to a 2010 CAS server directly (with a local hosts file perhaps) but I haven't tried this myself.

    Cheers, Steve
