Citrix Xenapp error, .ica file FQDN vs IP address RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm publishing Citrix XenApp web interface through UAG.

The Citrix web interface comes up fine but when I launch an application I get the following error:

    Summation Enterprise ERROR
Cannot connect to the Citrix MetaFrame server.
Unable to contact the MetaFrame server browser. There may be network problems, or you may need to configure the correct server address in the Server location field.

I have found that if I grab the the temporary .ica file (icaXXX.tmp) which was placed on the client in:
    c:\documents and settings\USERNAME\localsettings\temp\

The file received from UAG/Citrix has the FQDN of the target Citrix server.
    Address=citrix-server.example.com:1494

If I try to launch the application using the file I get the same error as above.

However if I change the Address parameter in a copy of the .ica file to be the
IP address, then I can launch the application using that .ica file without error.
    Address=192.168.1.12:1494

I tried listing the shortname, longname and IP address in the list of Citrix Farm Servers on the published application (Citrix XenApp(Web Interface 5.0)) but I still get the error.

Any ideas what might be wrong or more ways to diagnose?

  • It looks like this might be caused by the version of the Citrix client, old versions fail, newer versions work.

  • Hi

Have you seen the latest UAG PG blog about publishing XenApp 5.x?

    http://blogs.technet.com/edgeaccessblog/archive/2010/03/25/how-to-publish-citrix-xenapp-5-x-with-uag-2010.aspx

Although I'm not an Citrix expert, maybe it is worth the effort...

  • Dear Techaccnt,

Using the very latest Citrix client (v.12) solves the problem. Which is available for Windows.
We have been testing on OSX and Linux combined with FF and Chrome running on Citrix client with V.11 and had the same problem.

When the flip side, when accessing the Citrix Presentation farm via a Citrix Access Gateway (Standard Edition) appliance the problem does not happen.
The catch may be on how UAG and CAG perform the connection brokering.

    I hope this proves insightful.

    Best,
    Tarso.

  • Hi,

Please help me understand how did you manage to get the launch.Ica file read the FQDN instead of ip Address.

    Citrix Xenapp 6.5 Farm.

What I am trying to achieve in our environment is we want to access the published application via DA. I have read Richard Hicks article and implemented the solution provided however the iCA file still reads the IP instead of FQDN.

    https://directaccess.richardhicks.com/2015/05/05/directaccess-clients-unable-to-access-citrix-xenapp-resources/

    - In our computer policy we have added the Test worker group which has two Xenapp Servers.

    - We have rebuilt the LHC of the Servers.

    - The Gpupdate /force fails to apply the Citrix policy is what I get when I force it on the server.

    - We have rebooted the two servers.

The only time it works is when you manually modify the IP to FQDN in ICA file. Hence please can I ask you to explain me how you got it sorted out.

Happy to provide any additional information require. Need help on this to meet a deadline.

    Thanks & Regards

    Gaurav
