Add nodes Win Server 2016 to SQL server failover cluster RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We have a Sql server failover cluster composed of 2 Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition .

    CLUSTER1 :
    SERV1 : SQL SERVER 2012
    SERV2 : SQL SERVER 2012

We want to add 2 new servers to the CLUSTER1 but this time with Windows Server 2016 Standard Edition and SQL Server 2017.

    SERV3 : SQL SERVER 2017
    SERV4 : SQL SERVER 2017

Will it work this cohabitation : 2*Windows server 2008 ENT and 2*Windows server 2016 Standard on the same cluster ?

How to add the new servers to the cluster ?

How to install sql server on the new servers in failover mode ?

    Thank you !

  • Hello

    It will NOT work.
Windows 2008 R2 Cluster binaries cannot "talk" with Windows 2016 Cluster binaries.

  • Hello,

Indeed, I want to add 2 new servers on W2016 and SQL2017 to the existing sql cluster (composed of 2 W2008 and SQL2012).

I understand from your answer that it is not possible.

But if I add 2 W2012 instead of W2016, it will work ?

Then my goal is to upgrade W2012 to W2016.

    Thanks

  • Hello

    I understand your need.

But you cannot add Windows 2016 nodes to a Windows 2008 Failover cluster.

Unfortunately you will have to create a new Windows 2016 cluster then move your databases to that cluster.

  • Hello

Unfortunately I only give you bad news: you cannot.

    A "Windows 2008 R2" cluster can only have Windows 2008 R2 nodes.

I am afraid you will have to build a new Windows 2016 cluster.
