Is local profile for Web Application Pool account necessary?

    Question

  • Hi Guys,

    We are having below symptoms:

    • We are seeing some issues with Nintex workflows (.dll not found) at random times
    • Above error points to a TEMP profile in c:\users
    • There are many TEMP profile folders in c:\users
    • There is no profile for the web application pool account in c:\users

We've found some sources mentioning a local profile for the web application pool account is necessary and we would like to see this confirmed.

    Tx in advance.

  • Hi BarendDS,

Per my experience, it is not necessary to create a local profile for the web application pool account.

From message of the issue is that .dll file cannot be found.

Then we should find the reason of the issue and then resolve the issue.

And the issue is about Nintex workflows, if you want to ask for more support for the issue, you could post it to the Nintex workflow forum. There will be more support engineers and experts assisting you on the issue.

  • Hi Sara,

    Tx for your reply.

I find several posts indicating that a local profile is required/advisable.

    • http://iedaddy.com/2013/11/sharepoint-2010-event-id-1511-windows-cannot-find-the-local-profile-for-application-service-account/
    • https://vstepic.blogspot.be/2015/03/error-event-id-1511-on-sharepoint-2010.html
    • https://community.nintex.com/thread/1287

Below IIS setting makes it even more interesting, we can apparently disable the behaviour to look for the profile but what is the recommended setting for SharePoint?

    https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/vijaysk/2009/03/08/iis-7-tip-3-you-can-now-load-the-user-profile-of-the-application-pool-identity/

Anyone else can shed his/her light on this topic?

    Tx in advance.

    Kr,

    Barend

  • Hi BarendDS,

Did you get the same error “Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.” in your event viewer?

If you get the same error, you could log in SharePoint site with the application pool account.

And you also could do the troubleshooting steps in the articles in your post.

If you do not get the same error, you should do other troubleshooting steps to resolve the error.
