Local administrator rights required to complete SP3 upgrade? RRS feed

  • Question: Does a user with local administrator rights need to logon to “complete” the SP3 upgrade after the machine has had SP3 applied and rebooted?

I notice when I logon with local admin rights to a box that was just upgraded with SP3, a “cmd window” briefly pops up and closes. I’ve checked the registry of the just upgraded machine’s Run & RunOnce keys (remotely before logon), but did not see any new entries.

I do not see the “cmd window” blip as a non-admin user on first logon. If I logon after the non-admin account with an admin account, I see the “cmd window” blip.

My concern is the SP3 upgrade has a pending process (maybe cleanup?) that requires a user with adequate rights to complete. In our environment (+50K machines) this is very tricky to autologon because our workstations have disk encryption software installed, and requires an interactive logon before the windows GINA is displayed.
