SharePoint Properties Panel isn't available in new documents

  • A new document created by using the New menu to choose a content type in a library (or opening a .dotx from a library explorer view) does not have the Properties Panel enabled - using the button in the ribbon just switches to the backstage tab. It seems that the panel only works with an existing document.  Our use case for the old Document Information Panel (DIP) is to use content controls for library columns in templates (.dotx) so the content can be entered in the DIP with the context of the document visible. This is particularly useful for authoring new documents from the template. Unfortunately the backstage properties view is a bad substitute for the DIP so this has delayed our move to newer versions of Office. The new properties panel is promising, but I’d like to figure out how to get it to appear with a new document.

  • Hi jeffreyweiss,

What's the version of your Office application?

In the Word 2013, we can show the DIP via FILE tab->Info->click "Show Document Panel" as below:

In the Word 2016, we can view the property via File->Info->Click "Show All Properties" as below:

    Best regards,

  • Hello Grace, we are testing migration to Office365 Pro Plus. We use the DIP as you describe for with Word 2010 and Word 2013 - but since that feature has been replaced by the SharePoint Properties Panel we are testing it with our authoring processes. There are a few significant differences between how the new Properties Panel works and the old DIP. In our case it is a problem that we can't use the Properties Panel with a new document from a template.
