Net Time With Windows 2008 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need to set time services on a Windows 2008 Standard x64 server to obtain time from an AD server in our domain?  I perform net time /querysntp and I receive SNTP time.windows.com.  When I type syntax net time /setsntp I receive System Error 5 has occured.  Access is denied.  Why?  Do we have to have a 2008 AD PDC stood up in the domain?

  • The only command that worked to make w32tm sync on Windows 2008 was this one:

    w32tm /config /update /manualpeerlist:pool.ntp.org /reliable:yes /syncfromflags:all

I don't know if a service restart is needed. I worked for 2 hours on this "problem" now and even restarted. Now it works...

    Even though stripchart brings errors:

    w32tm /stripchart /computer:time.windows.com /samples:1
    Tracking time.windows.com [65.55.21.22:123].
    Collecting 1 samples.
The current time is 14.05.2012 13:34:45.
    13:34:45 error: 0x800705B4

  • Thanks G,

That helped me work around the Access is denied message I got when trying to use NET TIME on one of my Windows 2008 Hyper-V Core hosts.
