  • Hi,

    To back up the Managed Metadata Service and restore it in other environment, we need to back up the database of Managed Metadata Service Application and restore it in the new farm. Then create a new Managed Metadata Service Application force it to use the restored database.

    Information about how to move the Managed Metadata service application databases in SharePoint Server 2013:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/SharePoint/administration/move-or-rename-service-application-databases#PS

    Here is a blog about how to restore a Managed Metadata service application:

  • Hi,

    Please navigation Central Administration > Manage web applications > Select the web application and then click in "Service Connections" on the ribbon. Check if the Managed Metadata Service Application is checked.

  • Hi,

    Try the following PowerShell commands to backup metadata from the original server and then restore it in target server.

    Backup original Term Store:

    $mmsApplication = Get-SPServiceApplication | ? {$_.TypeName -eq "Managed Metadata Service"}

    $mmsProxy = Get-SPServiceApplicationProxy | ? {$_.TypeName -eq "Managed Metadata Service Connection"}

    Export-SPMetadataWebServicePartitionData $mmsApplication.Id -ServiceProxy $mmsProxy -Path "c:\mmsdata.bak"

    Restore to Target Term Store:

    $mmsApplication = Get-SPServiceApplication | ? {$_.TypeName -eq "Managed Metadata Service"}

    $mmsProxy = Get-SPServiceApplicationProxy | ? {$_.TypeName -eq "Managed Metadata Service Connection"}

    Import-SPMetadataWebServicePartitionData $mmsApplication.Id -ServiceProxy $mmsProxy -Path “\\location\mmsdata.bak" –OverwriteExisting

    Here are some blogs about how to backup and restore site collection with metadata to another farm which would help you:
