Migrate from one MIM 2016 environment to another

    Question

  • Hi,

We are running a MIM 2016 environment at the moment though the servers they are on are due to be decommisioned so we need to migrate this instance to a new set of servers. Are there any official Microsoft documentation on how to do this?

    Thanks.

  • I've never seen any docs on this specifically. Essentially you can stop the services on the old servers and then install MIM on the new servers and point to the existing databases.

You'll need to bring any custom workflow assemblies over and re-GAC them as well as any file system dependencies you might have.

    Thanks,
    Brian

  • So, this is the same scenario as moving from DEV to PROD, per se.

    - One way is to backup the DB and run the new install using the current DB.

    - Second way is to do a Migration of Configuration and build the https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=1663

Backup/restore option won't work for MIM Service DB if your domain is different on another env.

  • Dominick, I did not see anything about going to a different domain? They are decommissioning servers not domains.

In that case the DEV to PROD Migration is the way to go.

You've mentioned DEV/PROD domains so wanted to be clear about that.

Moving within the same domain to another server is easy, no problems as you can just install FIMService on new server and re-use existing DB.

But it is challenging to move config from different domain (which also may be considered as different environment, right?) that was not within the same AD forest.

  • I know this is an old thread.  I cannot find an answer to my question.  Please help if you can.

I have MIM 2016 sp1 running on Windows 2012 R2 Datacenter.  Can I migrate this to a Windows 2016 Datacenter server.  Would I simply follow the Configuration Migration guide.

    Thank you!!
