Unable to reach/ping the first adapter IP via the second adapter IP on Windows 2019 RRS feed

  • I have 2 adapters on Windows 2019 server. 

    Adapter 1

    IP: 172.16.31.151

    MASK: 255.255.255.0

    DEF GWY: 172.16.31.1

    Adapter 2

    IP: 192.168.18.151

    MASK: 255.255.255.0

    NO DEFAULT GWY

    I have a linux machine with IP

    IP: 192.168.18.152

    MASK: 255.255.255.0

    DEF GWY:  192.168.18.1

    I created a static route on the linux to reach 172.16.208.151 via 192.168.18.151, but could not ping the IP 172.16.31.151.

    I setup the same but using Windows 2012 server and the pinging was successful.

    Please, how can I resolve this on Windows 2019 server?

  • Hi,

    in Windows, routing between interfaces is not enabled by default. To enable that on Windows Server, you can either use the "Remote Access" feature or set the registry value HKLM:\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters\IPEnableRouter to 1 (not recommended because it enables routing between any and all interfaces).

    In any case, there's still Windows Firewall where you need to allow the traffic.

    I tried setting the IPEnableRouter value to 1 but still not able to ping.

    I have Remote Access feature installed, so please explain how to use Remote Access feature to resolve the issue.

  • You need to do an initial configuration of RAS where there are various scenarios. One of those is "LAN routing" which is exactly what you're after.

  • I eventually was able to configure the RAS. I figured out the LAN routing you mentioned and now I can ping the other adapter.
