Disable automatic download of optional features in Server 2019? RRS feed

  • שאלה

  • Hello, we are currently testing and preparing Server 2019 for Rollout in our productive environment.

One thing i'd like to get rid of, but haven't found a way so far, is how to disable the automatic download of optional features.

As our systems are not connected directly to the internet, download obviously fails and ends up in Pop-Ups and Notifications "Something happened, and we couldn't install a feature”.

In our case, as we are using english display language, but german keyboard settings, Windows tries to download features like “German speech recognition” or “German optical character recognition”.

We are not using WSUS for Patch Management, so this is unfortunately no option for us.

I know I can disable Action Center/Notifications, but I want to get completely rid of this behavior concerning “unwanted” downloads.

Any help is appreciated, thx in advance. Have a nice day!

  • Hi,

i think i found a different approach for this.

Idea was that there must be a trigger behind this behavior, so i searched scheduled tasks and soon found task "LanguageComponentsInstaller"

Started it manually, well known Message "We are adding some new features" immediately popped up.

Disabled the task, rebooted several times...all seems peaceful now :-)

Going to observe this for one more day, if that really solved the problem.

Gonna let you know, thx for your support!

  • What optional features are you asking about? Windows updates? If so you can set this one to Disabled. (not recommended)

If the status for this policy is set to Disabled, any updates that are available on Windows Update must be downloaded and installed manually.

  • Hi,

    thx for your reply.

As i wrote, i am talking about for our purposes "unnecessary stuff"

"In our case, as we are using english display language, but german keyboard settings, Windows tries to download features like “German speech recognition” or “German optical character recognition”."

  • Message: "We are adding some new features"

At this time, you can see the features in the download queue under "Manage optional features"

Download fails, and then again Message appears:

"Something happened, and we couldn't install a feature"

  • With the help of a pending reboot script and this piece of info, I managed to figure out what was preventing my SCCM 1906 update from installing. It was failing at the prereq check on Pending system restart. Disabled the scheduled task as per your discovery and all is well. Cheers!
