Windows Update not working. How do I get the WannaCry patch RRS feed

  • Question

  • Vista SP2.  Windows Update stopped working last August. Start the program and it just says, "checking for updates" and goes and goes and nothing happens.  I assumed Vista was no longer supported, but when I looked for info on the WannaCry patch on one of the articles said Vista was still supported and the should have been installed by Windows Update.  So, how can I get Windows Update to work and if I can't, how can I get and install the patch?

  • Had the same issue.

Restarting the Windows Update Service (in services.msc) and starting the ..msu again solved it for me.

  • From here, you can download the required patch for vista SP2.

If installing update is NOT OK, as a workaround, you can disable smb1 protocol (on which wannacry replicate) by the following command in elevated powershell console. (make sure you run the powershell "Run as Administraor")

    Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters" SMB1 -Type DWORD -Value 0 -Force

    sc.exe config lanmanworkstation depend= bowser/mrxsmb20/nsi

    sc.exe config mrxsmb10 start= disabled

The 1st command will disable smb1 server.

The 2nd & 3rd command will disable smb1 client version.

Then, you need to restart the server to take effect.
