manage admx for windows 10 policy RRS feed

  • Question

  • In Windows server 2008 (I know It's unsupported) I have policy to disable firewall but It doesn't work on Windows 10 clientso I need to download new admx file to manage firewall into Windows 10.

But old policy will be override the old policy ? Or I'll get 2 policy, each one for the recent and oldest OS ?

  • Hi,

Thank you for posting in our forum.

    1. if we concern about some old policy settings overwritten, we can only replace the ADMX file for firewall "windowsfirewall.admx".
there is an excel file in this link regarding detail ADMX file of some policy settings.

    2. we can download the latest ADMX files in this link:

  • in these days I'm verifying information you gave me and I'm going to make some test.

I have to understand if I replace admx with another one with same name, what happens to my old policies templates.

  • Hi,

Thank you for posting in our forum.

In Group Policy for Windows Vista and later version of Windows, if you change Administrative Templates policy settings on local computers, SYSVOL is not automatically updated to include the new .admx or .adml files. This change in behavior is implemented to reduce network load and disk storage requirements and to prevent conflicts between .admx and .adml files when changes are made to Administrative Templates policy settings across different locations.

To make sure that any local updates are reflected in SYSVOL, you must manually copy the updated .admx or .adml files from the PolicyDefinitions file on the local computer to the Sysvol\PolicyDefinitions folder on the appropriate domain controller.

  • Thanks, I read about it infact my target is to keep all admx/adml into domain controller Sysvol central store, avoiding admx divided into clients.

I wish to use windowsfirewall.admx, to enable or disable firewall, which you suggested to download by http link and Excel document shows these requirements: at least XP SP2.

If I overwrite this new admx at the existing one into Sysvol\PolicyDefinitions folder of my Win 2008 domain controller, I can mange firewall on clients which run from XP to Win 10, It’s right ? But my question is if there is consequence for the old policies which are using previous windowsfirewall.admx templates.

    Thanks again

  • Hi,
Thank you for your update and your patience
According to my experimental results, the new admx is used, and the settings on the old admx will not be overwritten
Hope this information can help you
