Merge in progress after backup hangs server RRS feed

  • Have a client running a 2016 server hosting multiple VM's. They use Windows Server backup - once the backup is done running the VM's all show Merge in Progress. One of the VM's is an Exchange 2016 server -it becomes unresponsive and mail stops flowing until the merge is finished (over 2 hours). Sometimes several Exchange services stop during the merge as well and have to be manually started after. Has anyone else seen this issue? Thinking about changing the backup to only the host physical drives to just pick up the VHD's -  would that eliminate the merge issue?

  • Hi,

    Do you have any checkpoints in your vms? It depends on the size of the checkpoint, if it is large and has been there a long time and your server is an active one (exchange, SQL etc.) this can take hours, if not days.

    You can try to merge the checkpoint first and then try to backup.

    None of the VM's have checkpoints - most of them run the merge in just a few minutes. It's just the Exchange serve that takes hours and hangs during the process. Thanks.

    If only the exchange server has this problem, considering the particularity of this server, we think this is a normal phenomenon.
