Auto open SharePoint Excel document in IE RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are linking to an Excel document in SharePoint Online using a hyperlink that will be sent around in an email.

If IE11 is closed when the hyperlink is clicked, the user will be prompted to Open or Cancel the document. We need this to automatically open.

If IE11 is already open, the document automatically opens with no input required from the user.

We have added the intranet domain to Trusted and Intranet zones in IE and I don't understand why the behaviour is different based on whether the browser is open or closed.

    Can someone assist?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Intranet sites automatically map to ....well the Intranet zone. Use the File>Properties menu in IE to confirm the IE Security zone a domain is mapped to.... Adding an intranet domain removes it from its default assignment... IE has a security zone setting "Prevent navigation into a zone of lower integrity".

SharePoint online(do you mean office365.com, well is online and should be mapping (automatically) to the IE Internet zone.

reset you IE security zones to their default settings. Internet Options>Security tab, click "Reset all zones to default".

then select the Trusted sites icon>Sites button.... remove your intranet domain and office365.com from the trusted sites list.

"If IE11 is closed when the hyperlink is clicked, the user will be prompted to Open or Cancel the document. We need this to automatically open."

that behaviour depends on how the site has been programmed or which IE security zone a domain is mapped to, and what addons are installed (popup blockers)..

By default Intranet sites do not use IE's built-in popup blocker, and do not block scripted windows for requests to the same origin/IE security zone.

To troubleshoot the issue you should have a programmer examine the coding/scripting of the web page where the link/form button is clicked... Links in intranet content that navigate into a zone of lower integrity should target "_blank".

    Regards.
