Terminal server 2008 R2 & RDS 2016 in same domain RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have a terminal server 2008 R2 with 100 cals installed in a license Server 2008 r2, we added recently a RDS 2016 with 200 cals.

the plan is to add a new license Server 2016 to manage the RDS 2016 cals.

my question is how we can keep using the old terminal server 2008 R2 with their 100 cals.

    thanks.

  • Both license server can be managed individually.  The RDS 2008 R2 will keep the 2008 RDS CAL and the RDS 2016 will manage only the 2016 RDS CAL.

If your users will connect to both RDS farm, the RDS CAL for this user will be upgraded to the Windows 2016 RDS CAL.

  • Hi,

When a user or a device connects to an RD Session Host server, the RD Session Host server determines if an RDS CAL is needed. The RD Session Host server then requests an RDS CAL from the Remote Desktop license server.

We can using group policy below to specify Licensing server for your session hosts:

Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Licensing\Use the specified Remote Desktop license servers
