Server Manager Roles and Features fail to refresh. Server 2008 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Server 2008 R2 SP1

    When I open Server Manager, I have no Roles and no Features.  Both show only ": Error"

    I know there are problems with my .NET 4.7.2 installation installation because it can't be repaired and can't be uninstalled.  What I don't know is whether Server Manager depends on .NET.

    Most Windows Updates download and install OK EXCEPT those for .NET.  SFC reports no inconsistencies.  System Readiness Tool fails.  NetFxRepairTool.exe fails with "unable to resolve the installation issue on your computer".   WindowsUpdate.diagcab fails.  Firewall is disabled.  Defender service is disabled.  I've re-registered all .DLL files in Windows\System32\.

    Event Viewer:

    Could not discover the state of the system. An unexpected exception was found:
    System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80070490): Element not found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070490)
       at System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ThrowExceptionForHRInternal(Int32 errorCode, IntPtr errorInfo)

       at Microsoft.Windows.ServerManager.ServerManagerModel.CreateLocalResult(RefreshType refreshType)
       at Microsoft.Windows.ServerManager.ServerManagerModel.InternalRefreshModelResult(Object state)

    I need something new to try.  Something that works, whatever that turns out to be.   Please don't suggest a clean install or an upgrade to Windows Server 2016.  This is a client computer.  They have asked me to fix it, not redesign it.

    As you can see here, WindowsUpdate.diagcab claims to have fixed everything, but the problems remains.  So, I'm feeling like this is not a WindowsUpdate issue.

  • I'd verify system and servicing health by running;

    sfc /scannow

    also system update readiness tool

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/947821

    Then check for errors in;
    %SYSTEMROOT%\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

    You could upload CheckSUR.log to OneDrive and then share us the link.

    Or, run an in place upgrade to try to fix the issue.
