Word 2003 Opens Document as Blank RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have a user who has Office 2003 SP3 installed but every now and again Word seems to open documents as a 'blank' document (document has info but when Word is opened by user it shows as though document is blank)

Running detect and repiar does not solve problem but deleting Normal.dot seems to fix

    Any ideas on permanent fix

  • Hi

Thank you for using Microsoft Office for IT Professionals Forums.

From your description, We must to clarify it’s for specific document or all documents.

Specific document means document corrupted, for this we need to recover document

All document means Office Program corrupted, for this we need troubleshoot Safe-Mode /re-name Normal.dot/Check file association

I have pasted some information from article to you. And I wish it would be useful.

Method 1: Check for strange behavior

Many damaged documents exhibit strange behavior. This behavior may be related to damage to the document or to the template on which the document is based. This behavior may include the following:

    • Repeatedly renumbers the existing pages in the document
    • Repeatedly redoes the page breaks in the document
    • Incorrect document layout and formatting
    • Unreadable characters on the screen
    • Error messages during processing
    • A computer that stops responding when you open the file
    • Any other unexpected behavior that cannot be attributed to the typical operation of the program

If the document shows any of these symptoms, or if you cannot open the document, go to method 2.

Method 2: Check other documents and programs

Sometimes, this behavior may be caused by factors other than document damage. To eliminate these other factors, follow these steps:

    a.       Look for similar behavior in other documents.

    b.       Look for similar behavior in other 2007 Microsoft Office programs or 2010 Microsoft Office programs.

If any of these steps indicate that the problem is not in the document, you will then have to troubleshoot Word 2007 or Word 2010, the 2007 Office suite, the 2010 Office suite, or the operating system that is running on the computer.

  • I have exactly the same problem with Word 2013 on Windows 10. Sometimes (quite randomly) instead of the file opening that has been selected I get a new blank document. If I try other menus and other documents the same thing happens and new blank documents appear. If I close Word and start again I still get blank documents. If I reboot the computer this fixes the problem but it can recur again after a few weeks. After rebooting everything is back to normal and files open normally.

This problem is restricted to Word.

This did not happen on our previous computer running the Word 2007 under Windows 7.

A real nuisance as rebooting the computer takes time and may interfere with other programs.

  • You can go through the steps in the response marked as an answer. Have you tried them?

As a work-around, try, with Word open and the active window on your screen, press Ctrl+O to open other documents.
