IE7 not opening XML files RRS feed

  • Question

  •

IE7 has stopped opening xml files.

I just noticed this today; it did work at one time.

I was working on an xslt transformation when I noticed the problem, but am not sure this is related.

When I try to open the file, IE starts a tab with the word "Connecting...." but never opens the file.

    Or, simply nothing happens.

I did use Advanced tab to reset IE, and still it will not work.

I tested several xml files, one that open successfully on other x64 Vista pc's, and that open in Firefox.

.... any help will be most appreciated.....

  • Hello,

Can you check what happens when loading this test XML file (XML example)? It should display as below.

    XSLT processor test

    property name

    property value

    xsd:version

    1

    xsl:vendor

    Microsoft

    xsl:vendor-url

    http://www.microsoft.com

    msxsl:version

    3

If the problem only occurs in Internet Explorer 7, please perform the following instructions to narrow down the issue.

    Disable IE add-ons

Click Start button, copy and paste "iexplore –extoff" (without the quotation marks) in the Start Search bar and Click Enter. Then try to open the XML file sample. How it works?

    Register DLL

    1. Log on as an administrator.

    2. Click Start, type cmd in the Start Search text box, right-click cmd.exe, click Run as administrator, and then click Continue.

    3. Copy and paste "regsvr32. msxml3.dll" (without the quotation marks) and then click Enter.

    4. Test the issue and let me know the result.

If the problem persists, please continue.

    Delete redundant registry keys

    1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search text box and click Enter.

    2. Navigate to the following:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension

    3. If you could view the xml value on the right pane, right-click it and select delete.

    4. Restart Internet Explorer.

Try above to see if it works, sometimes the third-party software may cause problems for IE to render correct xml files.

In addition, you might use Process Explorer to see how many 3rd dlls are linked to iexplore.exe process.

    Cheer!

  • Thanks so much for your response;  IE7 is opening my xml files, now.

Disabling the add-ons had no effect.

After registering the dll, the test file opened successfully.

I did not try the registry change.

Does this sound like something caused by development tools; is an ordinary web surfer likely to experience this?

Should I reconsider posting xml files (with linked xsl) to my website, as a user may have the same experience.
