Remote desktop connection always fails on first attempt

    質問

  • Every time that I attempt to connect to my desktop PC (running Windows 7 Professional x64) from my laptop (running Windows 7 Professional x86), the connection fails on the first attempt. The connection is established and I see the welcome screen on the host PC with the blue circular Windows icon. After about 3-5 seconds, though, the circular icon freezes. If I wait, I receive an error message that the computer could not connect. However, the second connection attempt always works! I just cannot figure out why that initial connection fails. It is puzzling and inconvenient to have to always try once, have the connection fail, and then do it again.

    I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Rob

  • I'm not set up to test with two different Windows 7 systems, but when I attempt an RDP connection from my Vista x64 system to my Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit system (already logged-in), and from my XP system to Windows 7, and from Windows 7 to XP I can connect first time.  I realize this information may be of dubious direct use, but it implies that an RDP connection CAN be established to/from a Win 7 system first time.

How have you set things up in the Remote tab of Advanced System Settings (System Properties)?

Are you getting a username/password prompt or are you trying to use stored information in an RDP file?

  • I have a similar problem. Every time I try to connect from a Win7 x64 laptop to a Win7 x64 desktop, the connection fails on the first time (just waits a long time on initalizing connection, and then fails). Trying it immediately again works just fine.

I don't have the password files stored in the rdp files, so it prompts me for a password each time.

    Any ideas?

  • Sorry, I can only add that I have been doing quite a bit of additional Windows 7 RDP since writing my note above, and in no case have I seen what you're seeing (my connections over the local LAN go through immediately), so bear in mind it is possible for it to work as expected, and that you should continue to seek a solution.

One of the things I have been having to do with my Windows 7 installations, which probably doesn't bear on this issue but it is worth mentioning.  In order to get the Windows 7 system to respond to PING in my network, I have to enable two latent rules in the Windows firewall:

File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4-In)
File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv6-In)

I doubt these have to do with this problem, but I thought I'd mention them anyway.

  • I appreciate that its a long time since this was first posted, but I have to say I'm getting exactly the same symptoms as Cheitzig here. Connection fails first time with a suggestion that the remote machine may be unavailable and then works flawlessly on second attempt. I get this with every connection to any of 6 different workstations. They are all running Windows XP.  I am connecting from a Windows 7 system.  Anybody come up with any reason for this yet??

  • Hi - I am having the same issue/symptom connecting to Windows XP SP3 from Windows XP SP3.  Does anyone have a suggestion on how to start troubleshooting this?  Thanks.

  • Anyone ever get a fix for this?  This happens in our local network and it is driving me nuts as I can't figure out why it is happening.  I have debugged and even replaced the network switches thinking that may have something to do with it.
