  • Hello,

We have this strange issue - when I try to extend a .vhdx - the job fails, however the disk is expanded, but I need to run a Repair-SCVirtualMachine job afterwards.

    Info about the enviroment:

    Hyper-V 2016 Cluster with 16 hosts

HPE BL460c G9 blades running HPE 2018.03 SPP

The VM's are Veeam Replica VM's from a 2012 R2 Cluster, which has been made a Permanent Failover by Veeam.

If I tend to install a clean 2012, 2012 R2 or 2016 VM with bare OS, a Dynamic Disk at 30GB on the SCSI Adapter - and extends with 1GB, no problems.

So, it seems that were having issues with Veeam Replica VM's.

    Any suggestions? :)

    Error (12700)

VMM cannot complete the host operation on the 'HYPER-V-HOST01' server because of the error: 'GUEST-DC01' failed to modify device 'Virtual Hard Disk'. (Virtual machine ID 370A1ACF-15CB-4EDC-BEA6-71A766482296)
    Unknown error (0x8002)

    Recommended Action
Resolve the host issue and then try the operation again.

  • Hello,

Are there any snapshots associated with the VMs, especially created by the third-party tool?

If so, please remove the snapshots before you expand the virtual hard disk.

In addition, you can perform the expansion in Hyper-V Manager, and just log the error message occurred in the Hyper-V Manager.

    Best regards,

    Andy Liu

  • No Checkpoints - if Checkpoints were present, the extend disk option is grey'ed out, afaik?

  • Microsoft has just released this Rollup 5 today : https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/4094925/update-rollup-5-for-system-center-2016-virtual-machine-manager

Will try to apply this later this week.

  • Extra information - extension of disks from Failover Manager works just fine.

  • Hello,

It looks like that the issue is on the SCVMM side.

Has the issue been fixed after you installed the UR5?

    Best regards,

    Andy Liu

  • I did install the UR5 - but the issue is still present.

However, we did find a workaround.

    1. Poweroff

    2. Expand (Working!)

    3. PowerOn

    4. Expand (working!)

Would be awesome if anybody has a better solution here. :)

  • Same issue here ... but no Veeam replica. Veeam is only used for backup purposes, no Replication.

Do you have any new information?

No news so far - sorry :(

EDIT : Possible solved in this KB : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4338822/windows-10-update-kb4338822

    Read here :

Addresses an issue that may cause the expansion process of VM disks that are running with RCT enabled to stop responding and never complete. VMs disks that are not expanded still migrate. However, cancelling the expansion would cause the host to become unmanageable as follows:
    • Can’t migrate VMs.
    • Can’t expand other disks.
    • VMs will be trapped in a stopping or starting state if you try to shut down or start them after the disk expansion has become unresponsive.
