Lync 2013 Client Sign-in issue with Lync 2013 Server

    Question

  • Hi there,

I seem to be having some issues at the moment trying to get Lync 2013 Client to connect to a Lync 2013 Server. The strangest thing is that the Lync 2010 Client will connect without any issue whatsoever.

Please find below the log from the 2013 Client

  • Are you using both clients on the same computer and with the same account? Or are these different computers?  The MAPI error code points toward a certificate trust issue which leads me to believe the clients are on diffrent workstations and the one running 2013 does not trust the CA used to issue the Lync Server certificate.  Some more details about your deployment are needed.

  • Hi Jeff,

The Test / Development Server is setup like this:

Host Server - Windows Server 2008 R2 - This runs the AD - Users, AD - CA, Hyper-V and PortProxy (For rerouting to the Hyper-V Servers)

    Hyper-V Setup:

    • Lync Server - Windows Server 2012 - Lync Server 2013
    • Exchange Server - Windows Server 2008 - Exchange Server 2010
    • Proxy / Web Server - Ubuntu 12.04 - Squid Proxy, Apache, PHP
    • SQL Server 01 - Ubuntu 12.04 - MySQL 5.5
    • SQL Server 02 - Ubuntu 12.04 - MySQL 5.5
    • Client O/S - Windows 7 Professional x64 - Office Professional Plus 2013 - Lync 2013 Client

Thanks, I've looked into the certificates and it appears that the certificates issued are trusted and installed by the client o/s. But just for laughs, I tried the Certificate Stage of the Lync Server Setup again and encountered a weird issue.

In requesting and assigning the OAuthTokenIssuer Certificate (using default selections), I encountered this error:

Command execution failed: The private key of the certificate is not marked exportable and cannot be stored in the central management store.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Try to generate OAuthTokenIssuer again and publish the topology , Check these steps for generate certificate

  • Hi,

Can you assign Default certificate correctly?

Please make sure you chose a different friendly name with Default certificate?

If the issue persists, please try to use PowerShell to request and assign OAuthTokenIssuer.

  • I have tried to create the OAuthTokenIssuer again, same issue, I do the steps as required, by the letter, I even double checked before continuing each step, but when it comes to assigning the certificate, it displays the error:

    • Command execution failed: The private key of the certificate is not marked exportable and cannot be stored in the central management store.

For some reason the CA refuses to acknowledge the tick stating that the private key has to be exportable. Maybe has something to do with Server 2008R2's CA.

    Thanks

  • A little more progress on this issue. I've double checked the DNS settings utilising the errors in the error log a made sure all requests are being answered by the correct server.

Performed the Certificate Re-assign, still errors out on the assigning and displays the error "Command Execution Failed: The Private Key of the Certificate is not marked as exportable and cannot be stored in the central management store". Even though it clearly says on the certificate that it is exportable when viewed in the certificate manager.

    Bug maybe?

This is the error log as it currently stands, I still don't know why the server won't accept the Port 5061 Connections.

  • Absolutely the same here. I got funny Errors first byreusing the "main" lync certificate first. Fixed that - got a OAuth certificate generate by the wizard. So far so good. Assigned it. Goes on a Little now - studck with:

  • We are setting the exact same thing for Lync 2013 MX (windows 8 from app store) clients. Everything was working fine, now all of a sudden we started getting this error.
    Monday, December 17, 2012 1:53 PM
  • We were having this same issue. For us it turns out it was because of the number of root cert authorities we had in that store on the server. The issue started for us after we updated the root cert list to accommodate federation. We noticed Schannel events with ID 36885. This led us to the following article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2464556

Once we update our registry on the Lync servers so that Schannel no longer sent the list of trusted root cert authorities during the TLS/SSL handshake the client started working.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi All,

It seems certification problem. Make sure Local Certification Authority server is %100 working.  Did you install any 3rd party program on DC, CA Server (windows server 2008 R2) ?

    Troubleshoot Active Directory Certificate Services

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731429.aspx

Try to install CertificationAuthority on different server. And complete step request - assign certificate. And Start services.

  • I have been working with Microsoft for a couple of weeks on this and we have identified a workaround that resolves the issue.

To be clear on my environment: I am using Windows Server 2012 with Lync Server 2013.  The issue was that the Lync 2013 Client could not login to the Lync 2013 Server while the Windows 8 Lync APP and the Lync 2010 client could log in.  We were receiving a lot of SChannel error messages (36888 and 36874) in the System log indicating TLS errors 10 and 40 and SChannel errors 1205 and 1203.  Basically the Lync 2013 client was unable to negotiate TLS 1.2 with the Lync 2013 Server.

To Resolve this issue do the following:

    - On the Lync 2013 server open the registry and browse to the following location: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SChannel\Protocols

    - Create the following Key under Protocol: TLS 1.2

    - Create the following two Keys under TLS 1.2: Client and Server

    - Create the following DWORDs under both the Client and Server Key: DisabledByDefault and Enabled

    - Under both Client and Server set the following: DisabledByDefault=1 and Enabled =0

    - Reboot the server.

Entering these keys Disables TLS 1.2 on the server forcing the client and server to communicate over TLS 1.1.

    Good Luck,

    Matt

  • Hi,

I had the same issue and adding those registry keys on the server solved the Lync 2013 client logon problem....but....

Now windows update is not working anymore...

When I remove the registry keys windows update does work again.

    Any idea?

    Thanks in advance,

  • I came across this while troubleshooting this exact issue.  In my case, it turned out the certificate was issued using a hash algorithm of SHA512, which seemed to cause issues with TLS 1.2 on Windows 2012.  Re-issuing the root cert and the Lync FE cert using SHA256 solved the problem without registry hacks.  Hopefully will work for others as well.

    I blogged about it here:

I have the KB2992611 installed on my Lync Front-end Server...
And i'm still having problems with Mobile Client 2013 not able to logon
    but mobile client 2010 can...

I still see problems Schannel Error ongoing in System Log.

what is the best solution ?
Or is the only way to fix this. The registry hack workaround ?

  • Hi All:

    I have the same problem.

Lync 2013 Client on PC works internally and externally.

Lync 2010 Client on PC works internally and externally.

Lync 2010 mobile works (with no push notification)

Lync 2013 client connect, send the message, but soon after comes up with "Failed to process the server response. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact your support team."

Will Microsoft release a permanent fix for this?

Did the workaround break the Windows Update for everyone?

    Cheers,

  • By the way, as TLS 1.0 is weak and some issues with TLS 1.1 are also known ... i do not really like the idea that TLS 1.2 should be disabled (it also caused issues with Windows update as mentioned above). As that posting is quite old, did anybody check if MS now support TLS 1.2 correctly with Lync (or ist that only added to SfB)?
