Meeting recording and video quality RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have been trying to get the full HD video for my Skype recordings, and using the following:

When a recording is published using Lync or Skype for Business...

I manage to get the video quality to 1920x1080 with 30fps. So this looks very good when I'm sharing a full desktop, but then I have the following issues:

    Issue 1 - Share Window:

When share a window the Skype Recording fails to convert recording to mp4. On the tool it reports the error:

"Runtime Error - The data specified for the media type is invalid, inconsistent, or not supported by this object."

Also when I'm looking for the file from:

    C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Communicator\Recording Manager\Temporary Recording Files\Temporary Files for....\AppSharing
I cannot open the .wmv files.

Issue 2 - Web Cam quality:

The quality from web cam is bad. Looks like VGA or even lower.

Is there some known limitations what can be recorded on Skype meeting and what quality level?

  • Hi Petri,

Does this issue exist before you modify the registry key called VideoFrameRate from Decimal 0 to Decimal 30?

Does anyone else have the same problem?

About Issue 1, the error message is prompted during the period of recording? Or when you open the .mp4 file?

You can clear the client cache and try again. Here are the detailed steps:

    1. Please right click the Windows icon and open the Run bar.

    2. Then type in: %localappdata%\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Lync\

    3. Delete the sip profile folder.

    4. Go into the Tracing folder, delete all files, but not the folders.

About Issue 2, do you mean that you join the skype meeting by Web cam?

If video quality is poor—meaning that call participants can see each other’s video feed but the picture is too dark, blurred, or pixelated, or the picture freezes—the following tips might can help:

    1. Check your connection.

    2. Improve the light conditions.

    3. Check your camera settings.

    4. Update your camera.

This was actually reported to me from other user, so yes, this is happening for others as well. And of course, it would be interesting to hear, how about you? If you do the Skype recording, do you see the quality is high enough? And I mean the video from web cam, not desktop sharing.

  • Hi Petri,

In fact, I change the recording settings in Skype for Business client as the following image:

After the recording finishing, I found the .mp4 file in the path C:\Users\xxx\videos\Lync Recording. The properties of the video file are as below:

  • Hi Sharon,

The problem is not the resolutions on the file. I was asking about the quality of the video, when you look at it, does it look like full HD? You could easily compare that by, search a picture from nature (e.g. forest, flowers, computer motherboard, etc..) and then share the picture on the meeting you are recording. For me that looks very sharp, but when I compare that to the web cam's quality.

I applied to this three screen captures from my meeting

First picture is taken from Skype client how does the web cam look on my site. As you can see the Skype logo on right up corner.

On second picture you can see how the quality on share desktop look like. The file is open on Gimp. But you can see it is very clear with all details. Even I have drop the resolution to here. So this is taken from the meeting recording.

And then the last one, from the same record, where I have stop sharing the desktop and showing only web cam. I cannot say this as a full HD :) There are those white space areas, but also, when you are looking for the quality of the video, it is awful. Especially when you have people on there.

So the question is still: is there some limitation on the quality what Skype recording can do? And how I could improve the quality?

    Web cam is Logitech's C930e.

  • Hi Petri,

Do you mean that when you use the webcam in the conference, the quality of video is too bad?

In server side, please check the value of MaxVideoRateAllowed by executing the command “Get-CsMediaConfiguration”.

By default, the value of MaxVideoRateAllowed is VGA600K, to enable the HD resolution, you should set the value to Hd720P15M. You can execute “Set-CsMediaConfiguration” to modify the value. For more details, please refer to: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/module/skype/set-csmediaconfiguration?view=skype-ps.

After changing the settings, you should run “Enabled-CsTopology” or restart the front-end server to make the changes to take effect.
