DISM error attempting to run online upgrade from Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise to DataCenter RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am running the following command on Windows Server 2008R2

    C:\Windows\system32>dism /online /set-edition:serverdatacenter /productkey:xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

    I get the following error:

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Version: 6.1.7600.16385

    Image Version: 6.1.7600.16385

    Error: 1605

The specified product key is not valid for the target edition.
Run this command again with a product key specific to the target edition.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

The most telling lines in the dism.log are

2012-06-25 13:44:58, Error                 DISM   DISM Transmog Provider: PID=2824 Product key is keyed to [], but user requested transmog to [serverdatacenter] - CTransmogManager::ValidateTransmogrify

I called Microsoft licensing and they told me they verified the product key, and there is nothing else I can do unless I want to pay for server support.

  • Just try to use KMS Client setup key and activate Yours MAK after upgrade.

Thanks, this is what worked for me as well.

Just run the DISM command to upgrade using the KMS client key, and then after the upgrade/reboot is done, change the product key to the MAK that you have gotten from the Licensing portal. I was tearing my hair out prior to seeing this solution!
