How to update Latest CU in SFB 2015 RRS feed

  • Question

  • This is on behalf of my partner

    We have

Site A with 1 Edge Server and 2 Standard Front End ( Not in a Pool Pairing)

Site B has one Front End

FE Server(s) are of Standard Edition and not in a pool

    FE has CU 5

    I have followed MS Article : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3061064/updates-for-skype-for-business-server-2015

    but is confusing

    1.       How to update the CU on First Front End server where is CMS store currently placed. Does it needs manual failure on other Skype Front server as we don`t have common pool for both front end server, if yes, how ?

    2.       Is there separate steps for edge pool to CU installation ?

    3.       All Skype Roles are dependent with each other, does it require downtime at a time for all the server ?

    4.       How many hrs. down time need for service outage?

    5.       While installing Skype CU, will be it impacted to Skype for business online users as we have hybrid setup ?

    Kindly advise

  • Hi,

No - you don't need to fail over the CMS.

There will be downtime so please do it out of hours.

You run Stop-CsWindowsService which stops all Sfb Windows services. Run the update executable.

You should also update the local databases

    Install-CsDatabase -Update -LocalDatabases

Reboot server. Wait for services to start.

Do this on all Front Ends and EDGE server. No need to update local database on EDGE server.

Each server should take 20 - 25 mins to update and the time for services to start after the reboot. The link you posted does cover what you need.

  • Hi,

What is your environment, on-premises or online?

You can follow the steps of the link above to update.

There is reference CU for Edge Server. You can just follow the steps.

When you apply the update, you'd better one by one. And it is unnecessary to offline.

  • Hi Sharon

    My environment is ON-Premise

The MS Article does not state anything related to CMS for a Standard Edition

    1. As Standard Front End Servers are not in a pool pairing , and CMS is only in first FE Server , please let me know if CMS needs to be manually failed over. ( as the MS Article does not state anything)

    2. What is the downtime needed ?

  • Hi,

As K_S_C said, you don’t need to failover the CMS.

Just follow the steps as official document, there is no need to do something with CMS.
