Lync 2013 crashes on start up.

    Question

  • My Lync 2013 client is crashing on start up.
I already tried to completely remove Office 2013 en re-install it, but that doesn't help. All Windows updates are installed.
Running as Administrator also doesn't solve the issue.
All other Office programs are working.
When I start Lync, after 2 seconds this happens:
I see this error on the Event viewer:
    I have a HP 8770w with Windows 8 Pro, 64 bit.
Office Professional Plus 2013, 64 bit version.

  • Updating te drivers of the Graphic Card didn't work.

But i removed them completely and re-installed them.

    Now Lync is working again.

I have an AMD FirePro M4000.

  • Try the following steps:

Explore C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15 in File Explorer, right click lync.exe icon, select Properties, click Compatibility tab, select Run this program as an administrator.

  • Try to update your Graphic Card drivers to the latest version

You can also check the solution in the similar thread

Please try to disable any local antivirus software to see if that fixes the issue.

Please remove Silverlight and reinstall it:

Delete the Lync .exe from the Programs (x86) folder and then launching from the start bar.

  • Uninstalling Graphics Card and installing again from device manager worked.  I have AMD FirePro V3900.

  • I had the same problem, setting the properties to run as administrator fixed it.
But then I got this error:

The file c:\users.....\outlook\.....ost is in use and cannot be accessed. close any application ... bla bla bla

and now, Outlook facing the same problem!
Had to delete (Rename) the ost file and restart Lync (first) - then Outlook.

Seems to be back on track

  • Just to share, I was able to resolve this issue.

The root cause for me, was that my Outlook OST needed to be repaired.

As Lync is tired into Outlook, there appears to be some dependency.

I found this out my opening Outlook, to which prompted for an OST repair task. After this task had completed, and Outlook successfully opened, Lync was able to be opened without issue.

Hope this helps others out, as I can understand the frustration with this.
