Exchange server recovery RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

I have a server machine running exchange server 2003 and on the same machine windows 2003 domain controller as a primary domain controller.

I have another server running windows 2008 as a additional domain controller.

we are taking regular backup of the exchange database.

Now the problem is that we are worried about the recovery of the exchange server in case of the hardware failure.

How i would be enable to recover exchange server in case of failure.

Do i need some more backup types. I am confused because we are running exchange and domain controller on the same box.

    What should i do.

    Please reply.

  • Correct ! You have to use swicth /DisasterRecovery in case hardware failure and need to recover crache exchange sevrer. /DisasterRecovery is same as we have used /recoverserver in Exchange 2007.

  • Hi guys,

    Thank you for your replys.

One more question is that when i will restore the crashed server(exchange+ Domain Controller) from the system state backup. There would be already a running windows 2008 domain controller.

So in this case  "do i need to reset the crashed server's account in th active directory or not". Or it will maintain the account trust with the domain.

    Looking forward for your reply.

  • Hi Dhruv

Sorry may i was not able to clear my question.

Look the current running scenario is

    1) One machine of windows 2003 which have exchange 2003 installed + windows 2003 Domain controller with all FSMO roles.

    2) Second machine of windows 2008 which is additional domain controller.

Now in this case i am worried about disaster recovery of my "First machine".

i am taking the exchange databases backup. I am also taking the Full computer backup set. Is that sufficient?

Can you or anybody tell me that in the case of recovery what steps should i do.

    Waiting for your reply.

  • You should follow below points:

1: Install member server windows 2003 on crached H/W DC and recover sevrer using /DisasterRecovery switch

2: Install additional domain controller on new machine (Should not keep exchange on DC as above point out)

  • Hi Anil

    Thank You for your reply,

Anil in the 1) step of your reply you said that

i should install member server windows 2003 and then recover exchange with /disasterrecovery switch.

    But

Anil can you explain that what wouldf be the Netbios name of that machine?

Will it be the same as of the crashed machine.  If yes then

Remember that crashed machine was the domain controller+ exchnage server.

How can i give the same machine while there is already an domain controller account with the same name in Active directory.

    Please help.

For this u need to delete old dns entry first of that server from dns server & then u can give same name to that new one server.

while giving a same name follow below steps-

    > dont join new server in domain keep it in workgroup & put the crashed netbios name.

    >restart & join to the domain

if dns entry is not registering in dns server due to some reasons run the following cmd

    ipconfig /registerdns

(it will take time to reflect the same)

  • Hi,

    Hope this will help you.

It is recommended to do not install Acrive Directory with Exchange Server on same phycical server. If your hardware is not fail then remove or demote AD from Exchange server and install in other physical server.

If failed then follow below steps:-

Step 1 : seized FSMO role into other ADC which is properly replicated.(Ensure replication is proper other wise it may cause problem)

OR you can also create a new AD in local site with another name and siezed FSMO role on it.

Step 2 : You cannot reset domain controller computer account. You have to deleted it.(which hardware failed)

Step 3 : Then give same computer account name of old exchnage server in new hardware in which you want recover Exchange server and add into domain.

Step 4 : For recovery of Exchange you use this below url and before using recovery switch ensure you have install all prerequisites are install on new exchange server.

    http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Recovering-Failed-Exchange-2003-Member-Server-Using-Disaster-Recovery-Switch.html

Since in this article it showing to reset computer account but in our case we have install AD also in same server we have to delete it because domain  controller account cannot reset.

  • Microsoft Inbuilt tool Eseutil and Isinteg.exe tools can recover files and repair damaged Exchange Server. You can use Eseutil/r to fix minor errors and if you want to recover large file then use Eseutil/p command. Enter this command line

    Eseutil /P c:exchsrvrmdbdataDB1.EDB /Sd:exchsrvrmdbdataDB1.STM

It will repair DB files in C: drive and SMT files in D: drive. You can than run the Isinteg.exe tool to integrate files and defragment Exchange server database.

  • Lekhdeeraj, I am confused on your post i.e.

    1. Whats the relevance to this post?

    2. Eseutil /r is to roll the logs its not a repair action and eseutil /p is a repair but should only be done as a last resort and ALWAYS make a working copy of the EDB before /P since it is a destructive action

Again though why are you posting to this issue and whats the relevance?

Search, Recover, Export Mailboxes, Folders, Email, Contacts, Calendars, Tasks, etc. from Offline Exchange Databases (EDBs), On-Premise Exchange Servers and Office 365. Migrate/Recover direct from any offline EDB into any On-Premises Exchange Server, even cross version i.e. 2003 → 2007 → 2010 →2013 → 2016 → Office 365 with Lucid8's DigiScope
