We are looking to move to SharePoint Online.
We have users in our On-Prem MOSS 2007 environment that use Exchange Distribution Lists to Email in outlook, Provision and send email alerts from SharePoint.
In SPO, we can't seem to do the same thing. MS is recommending we convert Exchange DLs to Security Groups.
Seems we have some gaps.
1. If the user maintains the Exchange Distribution List today, can and should users maintain Security Groups and where?
2. If our user is not on o365 Exchange yet and they maintain the DL today locally, will they also have to maintain the security Group or can the SG be used in all the same ways?
3. Is a SharePoint Online Permissions Group an option in any way? Won't it be tied to a one Site? How do we get to it from local Outlook and o365?
4. If we will have to use more than one, any way to keep them in sync all managed by the user?
