  • Hi there,

A generation 2 vm requires an ISO image that has a EFI bootable filesystem.
This is the biggest change from a generation 1 VM, that it has UEFI instead of BIOS as a firmware.
UEFI also enables the use of the GPT partition scheme instead of the old MBR partition scheme, which means you can create larger partitions.

So in short, the ISO isn't EFI compatible.
When using a modern Windows Install iso, it would boot.
It would show the Hyper-V logo with the moving circle while booting, instead of the windows logo with the moving circle.

A lot of modern Linux distros support booting from an UEFI enabled VM too.

  • You should use a different ISO.
What operating system ISO is this?
