  • Question

  • using SSMS 2016 outlining is not working.  I have another machine using SSMS 2014 and it works fine there.

Any idea how to make this work?

    Thanks.

  • Install the newest SSMS, which is v18.4 as of today. You can use it to connect with different SQL Server instances.

  • That is already checked.  I unchecked it, closed out and then rechecked it to wake it up, but it still doesnt work.  I dont have time to be installing new versions right now but could really use the outlining feature.

    thanks.

  • Thanks for answering my question.

I look it up and found this page with the information I need:

    https://sqlserverbuilds.blogspot.com/2018/01/sql-server-management-studio-ssms.html

    Quick Summary:

    Version Build number Release year
    SQL Server Management Studio 18 15.0.x.x 2019
    SQL Server Management Studio 17 14.0.x.x 2017
    SQL Server Management Studio 16 13.0.x.x 2016
    SQL Server Management Studio 2014 12.0.x.x 2014
    SQL Server Management Studio 2012 11.0.x.x 2012
    SQL Server Management Studio 2008 R2 10.50.x.x 2010
    SQL Server Management Studio 2008 10.0.x.x 2008
    SQL Server Management Studio 2005 9.0.x.x 2005

SSMS 18.x can be installed side-by-side with SSMS 17.x / 16.x or SQL Server 2014 SSMS and earlier.

  • Thanks.  I will get that when I install SQL Server 2019 (I assume it will be part of the same installation).

Question, is BIDs 2019 available?  thats usually the missing linke when they have a new release of sql server.

  • The SSMS is not the same install as SQL Server 2019. It is a separate installation.

You can install the newest SSMS 18.4 (Version 15.0.18206) today. Very quick to install.

There is no tool called BIDS in 2019, it would be called Visual Studio extensions.:-) Here is the link, please refer:

  • In the past there has been a tool called SSDT and also BIDs.  BIDs would be like a visual studion solution with report projects and each project containing many reports (rdl files).  BIDs has a report designer as well.  Are you saying all of this functionality is now in SSDT?

SSDT would be end in VS 2017. After that, it would become Visual Studio extensions (Part components of Visual Studio). For the history of SSDT, BIDS, you could see this article.

Previous releases of SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT and SSDT-BI)

  • That doesnt answer my question.  Where will we have projects containing ssrs reports similar to what BIDs does?

    Thank you.

  • Note, though, that there is a bug in SSMS (including 18.4) where it doesn't read the setting for outlining properly at startup. For me, it means that I cannot disable it. It can go the other way. See this and vote: https://feedback.azure.com/forums/908035-sql-server/suggestions/38727424-cannot-disable-outline-in-ssms

To get the latest version, we can download Visual studio 2019 community edition.

Tools --> Extension  --> Search SSRS and install it.

Now here, in VS2019, we can create/open SSRS reports.

  • Thank you, I'm looking forward to trying that out.  unfortunately installing SSMS 18.4 has caused numerous problems.  it corrupt my ssms 2016 installation and the installer for VS 2019.  Now which I discovered when tried the recommendation above.  I'll let you know when I get past this.  thanks again.

  • Well that didn't work.  now the VS 2019 Repair failed and I have even more problems.

Warning to All.  Dont install SSMS 18.4 if you are also using SSMS 2016 or VS 2019.

If you need more stable development tool, you could install SSDT for VS 2017. For SSMS tool, you may install SSMS 17.9.1

    SSMS 17.9.1
