Exchange Online Distribution lists do not seem to get their membership updated in OWA RRS feed

  • Question

  • In a test environment I have 3 mailboxes, User1,User2,User3 and a user called Allen.

I created a Users Distribution list called Users that contains User1.

In OWA logged on as Allen I create a calendar event for  Allen and invite Users.  User1 gets the invite as expected.

If I add User 2 to the Distribution group Users, they do not get invited to the event. (As a side not is it possible to get User 2 automatically added to the event?)

If I open the event and look at invitees I can see Users and then expanding that shows User1 only (not User2).

If I then create a new invite and invite Users again, if I expand the distribution list I can only see User1 listed. However the invite goes to User1 and User2 (as expected). If I then expand the distribution list again I still only see User1.

If I create a new email and address to Users and then expand the DL it expands to User1 and User 2

Why isn't the Distribution group showing User1 and User2 in the second event that was created after User2 was added or if I expand Users when creating a new event?

A log off, close browser and relogin still shows the DL with only one user.Users membership shows 1 user. Powershell showing 2 users.

I can understand why User2 does not show up for the first event as at the time of the event creation User2 was not a member, but at the time of creating the second event User2 was a member.

  • Checked back this morning and now the groups in OWA are showing up with both members when I look at the calendar invites. This took longer than 24 hours to update but has now updated on both of my test groups.

I guess we, and my clients, need to be really patient.

  • As other clients, OWA also does some caching, which might explain what you are seeing. Generally speaking though, it should reflect the changes must faster compared to Outlook. Did you switch to the People view and check the membership there?

  • Thanks Vasil - I suspected caching too but OWA typically seems to be the best at avoiding caches and ensuring I am seeing the most up to date information.

3 hours later my users group is still only showing me user1 when I open the latest event and hover over the users icon.

    Users shows 1 user

However my attendance shows user2 responded yes and user1 is optional, no response. The responses are correct, but the users should show both user1 and user2.

    Test users group response

Selecting The People/All distribution lists/Users I can see both of my users listed.

  • The other interesting thing is that if I create a new event and add the DL to the event and then click on the user to get the hover card it only shows me the one user in the distribution list.

    User DL showing one user

However in the same dialog box I hit the + on the same distribution list (highlighted in red above) it expands to both users.

  • Hi helsby,

Have you tried to get the membership of User using the command as follows? How many members are displayed?

    Get-DistributionGroupMember -Identity "xx"

And agree with Michev, OWA also does some caching. How's the thing going now? Is the issue persists, try removing and re-adding user2 and check again.

    Regards,

    Beverly Gao
