Creating a dynamic group in Office365 exchange online and pulling the data from the on premise active directory OU RRS feed

  • Hi Adm1n365,

Office 365 has got information only for the objects that are synchronized from your local AD to cloud via Azure AD Connect. So, to be able to achieve what you want, using AAD Connect to sync the related objects is a must. Please check out the article linked below to learn the details of using AAD Connect:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/hybrid/how-to-connect-sync-whatis

In addition to that, filterable attributes that can be used for dynamic distribution groups are limited. For the filterable attributes/properties in recipient filters, please check out the article linked below:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powershell/exchange/exchange-server/recipient-filters/recipientfilter-properties?view=exchange-ps

So, if you want to filter specific users by a filterable attribute and if those users as well as the attributes are already synchronized, you can do it.

Else if you want to filter users via a non-filterable attribute, you can use one of the fifteen ExtensionAttributes (named CustomAttribute in cloud) that are synchronized and filterable ones. By populating one of those ExtensionAttributes with the value of the non-filterable attribute, you'll have got it synced to cloud and be able to use that ExtensionAttribute in the RecipientFilters of any dynamic distribution groups.

Hope this helps. If you provide more specific details of what you want to do, we can provide more specific answers as well.

    Regards,
    Burak V.

  • Hi,

Agree with Burak, as said above, AAD Connect is necessary in the procedure.

You can create an inbound synchronization rule in AADConnect to send the Distinguished Name from On-Premise Active Directory up to Office 365 as custom attributes

For more detailed information you can follow the steps in this article:

Office 365 Dynamic Distribution Groups Filtered by On-Premise Organization Unit (OU).
