What are the permission required at Client SQL server side to configure backup in DPM 2019 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am planning to start SQL DB backup by DPM. I am logging in DPM server with my domain Admin account ARIF which has DPM Admin rights and other file servers backup is running ok.

    1. What is permission required at client SQL DB to start backup?

    2. Do  I need permission at each SQL DB?

    3. Suppose I take online backup of SQL DB 2012 and I restore it at SQL DB 2016, will this create problem?

    4. Do I need any special permission at there server where I am planning to restore it. FYI, have already installed MS SQL 2016 setup and created a default instance.

  • Hi,

    1. What is permission required at client SQL DB to start backup?

DPM doesn't need permissios to the SQL Sever itself to back up the databases, it runs under the LocalSystem (NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM) account which is a high privilege account within Windows.

    2. Do  I need permission at each SQL DB?

No, you only need the DPM agent installed on each SQL database server.

    3. Suppose I take online backup of SQL DB 2012 and I restore it at SQL DB 2016, will this create problem?

This should work you can always go forward, but you can't go backwards, at least not with backup and restore functions within the SQL Server Management Studio.

Note that you can't recover a system database to a different instance of SQL Server.

    4. Do I need any special permission at there server where I am planning to restore it. FYI, have already installed MS SQL 2016 setup and created a default instance.

    No.

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • It is set to "Manual" start because DPM will trigger it to start once the backup/recovery jobs are scheduled.

  • I have configured the protection group and backups are running successful.

You mean when a recovery point is about to run, DPM Server automatically "START" DPMRA service and when backup is completed, it puts DPMRA in "STOP"??
