SharePoint Online / Office 365 E3 or E5 equivalency rights or "dual use rights" RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

Does SharePoint Online / Office 365 E3 or E5 subscription provides the company right to use additional SharePoint installed on Azure VM (accessed by Online/Ent licensed users) without need to purchase additionally SharePoint Server license?

  • E3/E5 gives you sharepoint online plans which allows the respective user to get  access  to sharepoint online environment in the tennant.

I don't it will give us a sharepoint onprem license to  use in VMs.

But I think if you already have a sharepoint  onprem license you can  move it to Azure.

Refer: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-in/pricing/details/virtual-machines/sharepoint/ for more details on license mobility and how onprem  license  can  be  used  in VMs.

  • Hi MarinC,

As S_K_P said, E3/E5 gives you sharepoint online plans which allows the respective user to get  access  to Sharepoint online.

You must purchase a SharePoint Server license and client licenses from Microsoft to use in VMs.

Understand subscriptions and licenses in Office 365 for business:

  • Thank you Lisa for the answer.

Are you sure that company with already purchased E3/E5 or SharePoint Online named user licenses has to purchase additional CALs for on-premises or Azure VM SharePoint Server access?
