Replace old team site with modern hub site? RRS feed

  • Question

  • https://mydomain.sharepoint.com takes me to an old style team site. Is there a way to convert this to a modern hub site? There is actually no content in this site.

    Thanks!

  • Hi EdwardLee,

Actually, the workaround you provide is not supported by Microsoft, it might cause some unknown issue if we change the default root site collection template.

Besides, there is a new feature in Microsoft Office 365 roadmap that Enable communication site experience at the root site of a tenant, you can check the update on it.

Here is a thread which talk about Convert Classic root site to Communication site for your reference:

  • Hi EdwardLee,

If you want to migrate site content as lists and libraries, you can save the list/library as template and upload to the root site collection and create a new list/library using this template.

  • So, after doing some research it seems that the root site at https://mydomain.sharepoint.com can't be converted to a modern communication site. Here's a workaround that I found. Please let me know if I am misunderstanding anything.

    Thanks!

  • Thank you Grace! Very helpful!

I wonder... if I create a Communications Site now at / sites, will it be possible to move the site or migrate its contents to the root site once the root site is modern enabled?

    Thanks!
