Modify icon on site in sharepoint online

    Question

  • Hi Guys

I need to modify the icon when I create a new sharepoint online site. All the documentation says you can do this using the site settings -> look and feel -> edit title and icon but this does not appear under my site settings.

I have found that the site icon is stored under the site assets named __siteIcon__.jpg. When I replace this icon with my own it does work for some pages such as documents but it does not work for the home page (that reverts back to the color square with some letters on it). When I inspect the elements I see that they use different urls to fetch the image (weird?):

    Home page uses: <img role="presentation" aria-hidden="true" src="/sites/PrivateWealth/SiteAssets/__siteIcon__.jpg" style="display: inline;">

    Documents page uses: <img role="presentation" aria-hidden="true" style="display:inline;" src="https://gmgportal.sharepoint.com/sites/PrivateWealth/_api/GroupService/GetGroupImage" data-reactid=".2.0.5.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.1">

Even though I have the correct image in site assets it is not being picked up and used by the home page.

    Help please.

    Thanks.

  • You probably want to remove the URL from your post.

Which icon do you mean? The Site Icon is pretty robust so if it's not working then that's normally a sign that there's some user confusion going on. Can you upload an image, either directly or through pastbin etc?

Edit: Also your workaround is a bad idea. I wouldn't rely on it working as MS might replace that icon any time they feel like it.

  • Hi T Rex,

You should change the logo using site settings > look and feel, instead of replacing the original file. Clear the browser and restart the browser, check if it works.
